“ Manufacturer: Asda / Type: Salad „
As you may all know from my previous posts im doing a little experiment and making my way through the Asda smart price range hoping at the of it i find some decent products that would reduce my shopping bill, in these times its always good to try and save the pennies a bit !
I came across this asda smart price coleslaw when i was hunting out some potato salad for a salady type meal i was having and as i normally buy an up market brand of coleslaw i was surprised to see this smart price version for the mare price of 20 pence !
As with all packaging in the smartprice range its basic but informative with product info, a list stating the ingredients and salt sugar levels calories etc. the tub is see thru with a lid that pops on and off wrapped in a plastic when first brought.
On inspection the coleslaw looks like no other plenty of cabbage some carrot and onions in a mayo sauce. So i thought i would give it a risk as it actually looked quite promising for the price.
Now i eat alot of coleslaw and i specially like it with cheese in a sarnie so i did have high hopes for this good looking coleslaw when i finally got the tub out the fridge to make this sarnie !
To be honest i couldnt be further from the truth it was a total disapointment ! its only when you put your fork or spoon in the pot you realise its the price it is, the mayo was so runny and watery it made my bread totally soggy and i was so gutted. it didnt compliment the cheese in any way because it was so bland, you could tell it was cheap, unseasoned rubbish !
I was gutted because on this journey i have discovered some great smart price products but along with the bread (see other review) this was shambolic, and im certain i would be going near this product again, I have found the asda "chosen by you" range of coleslaw is fantastic and is only about 40 pence more expensive so i think i will stick to that
(To dooyoo, i would love it if we could review some "chosen by you" products on this site as i have never been disapointed with anything of this range that i have brought)
All in all i guess its ok if you have alot of guests round as its cheap and would go ok on a buffet table, but lets be honest if you served them this you have to think how much you actually like the people thats in your company lol
Not for me !
Weekly I buy coleslaw. Either to pep up a salad or a sandwich but more often than not on a jacket spud with some butter and cheese as a nice treat!
I usually buy rather alot more expensive coleslaw than this as I really like premium quality and a nice creaminess to it however this I spotted in my local Asda store only costing 20p for a 250g tub of the stuff so I thought it had to be worth a go for that price!
This coleslaw comes in a white and green plastic tub with a pull on/off lid to the top of it and it has a plastic see through seal round the lid that easily pulls off when you first purchase it. We are told on the tub of course that it is Asda 'Smart Price' Coleslaw and then other information listed on the tub includes the ingredients and allergy advice being given, storage details nutritionalitonal chart are also listed as are contact details for Asda. Cheap looking but robusinformativerative enough tub this is.
The Coleslaw Itself:
What you get in the tub is thin slices of white cabbage (60% of this is made up of that alone) in some thin and liquidy mayonnaise and with small slithers of carrot. Onions are also listed on the ingredient list along with mustard flour but I can't taste either of those ingredients at all within it. It looks ok, smells of cabbage but for me there is too much thin and sickly sweet mayo on this making it ever so drippy and hard to handle. It isn't well seasoned however the vegetables are crunchy enough though again the carrot, in my opinion lacks flavour really and all I can taste is cabbage in mayo!
This is a very cheap offering and not one I appreciate at all and I personally wouldn't try penny pinching on this type of product again. Its lacks a nice thickness and flavour!

I have been buying this particular brand of coleslaw for a few years now. The main motivation behind my repeat purchasing is the price - at 20p for a 250g pot you'd be hard pushed to find a cheaper coleslaw product.
This item can be found in the chilled section at most Asda stores. The packaging is distinctly basic. It comes in a plastic green and white pot. However I don't think that this is important - it's the product inside that counts!

This product is made from a combination of cabbage, carrot and onion in a mayonnaise dressing. You do occasionally find green pieces of cabbage within this product - which I avoid eating, but in the main part it is quite a nice product.
Obviously this in not the most luxurious coleslaw you will ever taste, but personally I like the consistency - it isn't too creamy - like other coleslaw products that are available on the market - and it is quite crunchy to eat. You can taste a hint of mustard within the mayonnaise dressing, but it isn't too overpowering, so don't worry if you're not a mustard fan.
I am very wary about calorie content when it comes to coleslaw because some products are very fatty, however with this item you will consume 82 calories per 1/3 pack which I think is more than acceptable.
I won't lie to you, this product doesn't taste amazingly fabulous, but I find that it makes a more than adequate addition to a summer salad and for 20p per pot you really can't go wrong!
Four out of five stars.
