Advantages: cheap, good taste
Disadvantages: none
Being a student again thought me to take some risks in the kitchen I wouldn't take if I would work full time; sometimes it was definitely worth the risk like the delicious Smartprice crumpets for 6 pence each - sometimes it was a huge waste of money as with the Smartprice minced meat which ended in the bin instead of on our plates.
A huge jar of curry sauce for astonishing 4 pence , yes it's really 4 pence you can trust your eyes, sounds quite risky for my taste buds but certainly affordable for my wallet, in the end loosing 4 pence is not going to make me much poorer.
I bought one jar of the ASDA Smartrice Curry Cooking sauce and a pack of Chinese stir-fry - a healthy lunch for 3 people that cost us in total 1 pound and 4 pence. Honestly I didn't expect much, the brown colour of the sauce is less than appealing and the typical smartprice packing is usually not promising culinary wonders. Now imagine my surprise when I opened the jar and was hit by an absolutely delicious sweet and fruity smell! It smelled a lot better that expected, very mild with strong fruit influences, recognisable as a curry but lacking the distinctive spiciness I love so much.
Preparing the food was my job, and a rather easy one as I may add. After stirring the vegetables for a couple of minutes in a wok the only thing I had to do was to add the sauce and let it simmer for around 15 minutes. Soon the kitchen was filled with this delicious sweet smell. not only promising but also very mouth watering!
The curry looked nicer on the plate than the sauce did in the jar, the colour seemed to be more yellowish than brown now. The sauce is rather thick which makes it perfect to serve with rice but on the other hand it's not really suitable for curry soups. Anyway, now to the most important question - how did it taste?
It was delicious! Yes, I really did not expect it but the curry was lovely, quite mild and fruity but with a distinctive spiciness. The sauce contains whole sultanas which blend in perfectly with the rest of the mix. If I have to compare it to something than I would say it tastes like something you could find in Marokko or maybe South India, not like a spicy Thai curry.
You can taste many of the different ingredients, especially the coconut milk and the fruit, a great mix especially for people that don't want all their food to be covered in chilies.
I went back to ASDA right away to get more of the curry cooking sauce and bought loads. There is just no better edition to the normally quite bland student diet than this delicious sweet curry. And it does not only go well with vegetables, try it with lentils or even with pasta, there are so many varieties and all this for 4 pence!
This is one of the best Smartprice products I tried so far - definitely a 10 out of 10!
