Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: bland
I made a cheesecake a couple of weeks a go and one of the ingredients I needed was some digestive biscuits. I wasn't about to pay for a full priced packet of the Mcvities variety so I picked up these instead. They cost 38p for a 400g pack.
The biscuits are quite small compared to the brand name but at the rate I eat things like this it really doesn't matter to me. Personally I'm not a dunker as I don't drink tea or coffee and if I try to use my hubby's hot drink then he moans that I leave it in too long and he doesn't want to end up with a load of sludge in the bottom of his mug.
The biscuits are a nice brown colour and look as though they have been sunning it on a beach in Jamaica for a few weeks. The have the words 'Sweetmeal Digestive biscuits' written on them and are around an inch thick.
As I was making my cheesecake I couldn't resist taking one of the biscuits from the packet and having a little munch. I wasn't really that impressed with them. They were really sweet and oaty and the biscuit got stuck in between my teeth as I was eating it. I was a little afraid that they may be too salty for me. I don't tend to add salt to anything so can really taste in a lot of foods and find it really off-putting but I couldn't taste the salt at all. They were just quite bland and didn't have much about them.
The biscuits were pretty sturdy although I did notice they they got a little crumbly as I got to the bottom of the pack. I'm not sure if that was due to the fact that I let my two year old son man handle them or if they re a little bit crumblier than the Mcvities range. For me this isn't a problem because it's not like every biscuit was absolutely broken to pieces, there was just a little bit taken off the edge of a few of them.
I wouldn't really recommend these to eat straight from the packet unless you are partial to a dry, bland digestive, however they did make a great cheesecake base. They are definitely not one of the smarter products in the Smartprice range.
Summary: Plain awful!
