Advantages: taste just as good as other brands, cheap

Disadvantages: slightly crumbly

Like many people I am trying to cut back on my spending at the moment, and when doing my latest online shop, I put a pack of ASDA's Smart Price ginger nuts in my basket to try.

~Packaging~

These come in a plain green and white wrapper, and it tells us on the back that it is not currently possible to recycle it. Obviously, like most economy brand items, the packaging is very plain as they want to keep costs down.

~Appearance and smell~

Appearance wise, the biscuits look fine, and I wouldn't necessarily know from looking at them that they are a cheaper brand. They are a decent size (not too small), are a rich ginger colour and have that lovely crackled look to them.

As soon as you open the pack you are hit by a strong ginger smell, which reminds me of the ginger biscuits my grandma used to give me when I was little.

~Taste~

The first thing I noticed about these biscuits was the texture. As you bite into the biscuit, you'll see that it has a slightly drier, crumblier texture than a lot of other brands. I normally find that you need to really bite down hard into ginger nuts, and although these have quite a crunchiness to them and are by no means soft, they were softer and easier to bite into than most. In terms of texture -but not taste- I would say they are very similar to the biscuit part of Foxes crunch creams.

The taste is lovely. I seem to remember the ginger biscuits my grandmother buying were Foxes, and again I'm reminded of them here. The ginger taste is just right - not too overpowering - and the sweetness is just right as well, they are not too sugary. Personally, other than a slight crumbliness of the biscuits, I can't really tell the difference between these and other more expensive brands.

~Nutritional Info~

Per biscuit:
46 calories
0.6g protein
7.2g carbohydrate
1.6g fat

~Price~

A 300g pack of these biscuits costs just 34p from Asda. As well as being cheap, you're also getting a fairly large sized pack for your money.

~Conclusion~

I will definitely continue to buy these in the future. The taste was not too different to the more expensive brands, and although there is a slight difference in texture, after eating a couple it's not something you really notice. If you're on a budget, I would recommend giving these a try instead of the more pricier brands.

Summary: Why pay more?
