I love ginger nut biscuits, and I eat a lot of them so I fancy myself as a bit of a connoisseur! I don't like them to be too strong or gingery though, so I tend to avoid McVities Ginger Nuts, which have a bit too much flavour in them for my liking and make my throat tickle! They are also too expensive, so I normally buy Asda's own brand Ginger Nuts. They taste lovely, with a strong, snappy texture and a decent amount of ginger, but not enough to make me gag. However, when I went to Asda the other day, I found that they were out of stock. I thought therefore that I would try Asda Smart Price Ginger Nuts instead, assuming they wouldn't be very much different. I was wrong.

Asda Smart Price Ginger Nuts come in a very plain, very unattractive white packet with a green stripe on it. The packaging screams 'value brand' and cheapness. However if a product tastes good then I can ignore it having unpleasant packaging.

As soon as I bit into the first biscuit, I knew that this was not the case with this particular product. The texture of the biscuits is not very nice: it's heavy, stodgy and dull rather than snappy and crisp like a ginger nut should be. The taste is no good either: at first there is a small hint of ginger, but that soon fades and the rest of the biscuit is almost completely without flavour.

There is nothing good to say about these biscuits, and having examined the prices on the Asda website, they are not even much cheaper than the normal Asda brand ones. The Smart Price variety costs 34p for 300 grams, and the normal Asda brand costs 50p for 400 grams. That means that Smart Price ginger nuts cost 11.3p per 100 grams, and the normal brand costs 12.5p per 100 grams. For an extra 1.2p per 100 grams, you can get a much higher quality biscuit, so I would recommend you do that rather than opt for the Smart Price version.

These biscuits have around 45 calories and 1.6 grams of fat, just in case you were wondering. A high price to pay for such a tasteless biscuit.

Summary: Rubbish
