Advantages: Cheap , subtle ginger taste

Disadvantages: Subtle ginger taste, crumbly and go soggy quickly

I mentioned in a previous review I have started eating Ginger Nut biscuits in volume. In order to keep my spending low I have been purchasing Ginger Nuts from the supermarkets own value brands in order to save the pennies. It had been a good experience so far ... until I tried Asda Smartprice Ginger Nuts......

***Packaging***

The packaging is very plain as you would expect from a value range so not the most appealing to have on display in your cupboards. The packaging is branded in the same way as all of the other Asda Smartprice range, white packaging with a green stripe and green font written on the front of the biscuit packet.

***Price***

For a 300g pack of biscuits the price is 33p at Asda. This is 1p cheaper than the Tesco Basic Ginger Nuts. A 300g pack of McVities Ginger Nuts are 78p so by purchasing the value brand you are making quite a big saving!

***The biscuits***

The biscuits are about 4cm in diameter and 0.5cm thick. These are a golden brown colour. To look at these biscuits from Asda they are slightly lighter than ordinary ginger nut biscuits and the difference would be noticeable if another brand of biscuit was next to these.

When you open the packaging a rich ginger scent hit you which is very pleasant, but not as strong a scent compared to when you open other brands of Ginger Nut biscuits. I did notice that a number of the biscuits in my pack were broken, but my first thought was that I had just chosen the wrong pack.

When you bite into the biscuit the taste of ginger is apparent but not actually as strong as with some other brands. The taste is a very rich subtle ginger taste with a more buttery taste. As you swallow the biscuit the ginger taste is less apparent and you are left with a buttery taste in your mouth. If you do not like the taste of ginger snaps to be strong then you will probably like the Asda Smartprice Ginger Nuts. However if you like a stronger ginger taste, you will probably find that these biscuits are lacking flavour.

The texture of the Asda Ginger Nuts are softer and crumblier than most other Ginger Nut biscuits. As you bite the biscuit the biscuit is quite soft and crumbles and the texture is very dry. I did notice that the biscuits go soft very quickly when you open the packaging therefore you will need to store these in an airtight container. If you plan on dunking these in your tea then you will need to just give a quick dunk, as these Ginger Nuts fall apart quickly. Prepare to spend time fishing biscuit crumbs out of your cup of tea.

***Nutritional Information***

Per biscuit

1.6g fat

In comparison to the Tesco Value Ginger Nuts there are less calories and less fat in the Asda Smartprice biscuits.

The biscuits contain wheat and gluten but are suitable for vegetarians. It is also stated on the packaging that the recipe does not contain nuts but are made in a factory where there are traces of nuts.

***Overall***

I'm not a biscuit snob at all and am not embarrassed to purchase the value brands providing the biscuits are good. In the case of the Asda Smartprice ginger nuts they are pretty poor and I will not be purchasing again. Too dry, too crumbly and lacking flavour!

Summary: Value ginger nuts from Asda, edible but not the best example of Ginger Nuts
