Advantages: Very cheap, taste great, crunchy, almost as good as the brand above
Disadvantages: Quicker to go soft, vague nutritional info, higher sat fat
My other half can demolish a packet of biscuits in one sitting and therefore I fight a constant battle to keep the biscuit tin from being empty - to be fair to him he is a marathon runner and therefore burns all the excess calories off, I know for a fact if I ate as many biscuits as he does I would be in serious trouble!
Anyway, I have been trialing the Asda Smart Price versions of some of his favourites just to see if they are as good because they are a lot cheaper than the next brand up. These ginger nuts, for instance, are a remarkable 34p per packet and the next brand up is 68p so exactly double the price.
The packet contains around 16 biscuits which is the same as a standard packet and to my mind they look and smell identical with a strong aroma of ginger coming off them the moment the packet is opened. I put them all in the biscuit tin and waited for my other half to comment.
He did not notice that these were in any way different to his usual biscuits and in the end I had to ask him if he had noticed at all, to which he replied 'no'. I tried one myself at this point to see if they really were as nice and I have to say that if it came to a taste test I honestly do not think I could tell the difference, these biscuits are definitely as crunchy and tasty as the brand above.
Spurred on by the success of these biscuits I decided to use them as a cheesecake base the following week (using Luigi's foolproof recipe which really does work!) and they performed equally well to a higher priced brand in this test too. All round they do seem to be of equal quality to the Asda own brand range.
The only area where I felt that these biscuits were let down a little was the fat content which is slightly higher and the fact that the packaging is a little vague, only showing values per 100g and not per biscuit. Also they do go soft pretty quick but then to be fair so do any other biscuits if you do not keep them airtight, we did think these went softer a little faster than other brands we have had.
Overall though, for the price these do come out very well as an economy brand product and they are definitely one which I will continue to buy instead of the more expensive brands.
Summary: A great product to downshift a brand with.
