Advantages: cheap
Disadvantages: goes off quickly, dry, grey, poor taste
Asda Smart Price bread looked like a good buy because I pay £1.04 for Warburton's bread at the moment. I use three large loaves per week, so I thought it might be worth trying the cheaper brand.
The packing is simply a plastic bag with green writing on it, but that should make no difference to the product inside. I thought that the bread slices looked much smaller than the Warburton ones. They are supposed to be medium sliced.
The colour of the Asda bread was kind of grey and of putting and it felt a bit dry to touch. I'm used to pure white bread that is moist to touch and eat. However, I did persevere and decided to toast a couple of slices. The texture of the bread changed but the toast was kind of rubbery to eat. The taste can only be described as foam rubber flavoured with yeast and a sprinkling of salt.
I really didn't fancy using it to make sandwiches because of the grey colour. I believe this has to do with the grade of flour used to bake the bread.
After two days I found this bread inedible. It had a strong, foisty kind of smell and was quite dry to the touch. The grey bread had started to turn pale yellow in places.
In the bottom of the bag I found spots of blue mould which should not appear on bread that is still within its use by date. Apparently this is caused by bread being packed into bags in the bakery before it is cold. Condensation forms in the back and seeps down to the bottom. Yuk!
So, although I am trying save a few pennies here and there, just like everyone else, I won't be buying this bread again. I would rather stick with Warburtons and know that I am getting a product that I will enjoy eating and that will last well over its use by day.
Summary: Not worth buying, doesn't last, poor taste.

- 12/09/09 Agreed, this is a poor effort. It's okay for toast as a desperate measure, but that's about it. |
