Advantages: Lovely flavours

Disadvantages: A lot of sugar

I've always been fond of Midget Gems and my Dad absolutely adores them but the popular brand, Maynards, are quite expensive for what they are. For this reason I am always on the look out for cheaper varieties and that is when I came across Asda's Smart Price Midget Gems, which are now a frequent sitter in our shopping basket.

The sweets in question come in a very plain white and green bag with the words Asda Smart Price Midget Gems printed prominently on the front. The front of the bag also tells me that the sweets are free from artificial colours or flavourings. The back of the packet is simply white in colour and has green writing on it that tells me how to store the sweets and Asda's refund policy as well as the ingredients and nutritional values of the sweets within.

Upon opening the bag you are met with a very sweet and extremely fruity smell. This smell was exceptionally appetising to both my dad and me. The bag itself was also very full, which is always a positive thing in my mind, and contained 175g of sweets. The sweets in question are the same shape as all midget gems. Small and circular in shape with a flat bottom. The bag also contained a large variety of colours ranging from yellow and orange to black, green and red. There was also a good proportion of each coloured sweet rather than a mass of one and then only a couple of another.

The varying colours of the sweets signify the varying flavours of them. The yellow ones are of course a cross between lemon and pineapple, the orange ones orange flavoured, the green ones lime flavoured, the red ones a mix of strawberry and raspberry and the black ones have a somewhat liquorice taste.

I must add at this point that upon tasting each of the sweets they do have distinctly different tastes to one another, which isn't always the case with cheaper varieties of sweets. The red sweets as always are my favourites ones but that was always going to be the case seeing as I love berries so much. The black ones however are equally as delicious as they are so unique in comparison to all the rest. My dad personally prefers the citrus tang of the orange and yellow sweets. The lime green sweets however seem to be the least favourite ones in the bag for both of us although they are rather refreshing to eat. Each flavour is relatively sweet in my opinion but not over sweet and therefore sickly.

The Nutritional Values for the sweets are printed below:
100g contains...
348 - calories
4.3g - Protein
76.8g - Carbohydrate
46.3g - of which sugars
0.2g - Fat
0.2 - of which saturates
Fibre - Nil

As you can see from the above the sweets do have a high quantity of sugars within them and this probably accounts for the somewhat sweet smell at times. Despite this however I would recommend them as they do taste delicious. Better still they only cost 32p, which is miles better than the £1 bracket for a bag of Maynards. The high sugar content does however mean that I am only going to give these super little sweets 4/5 stars.

Summary: A super sweet at a super price
