Advantages: cheap, good taste
Disadvantages: slices are too thin
Upon moving to my University town the first thing I did was shopping at ASDA, after months of Tesco Value products I needed something new.
Unfortunately "Smartprice" has the same rules as "Value", some products are great other downright bad.
---------------
I'm not too sure in which category to put the pitta bread, 19 pence for 6 medium slices of white pitta bread as a really, really good price. And in the end they do their job; others might be a bit better but these here are definitely the winner when it comes to quality/price.
You'll get 6 medium slices of pitta bread in a small see through plastic bag. They vary greatly in size, shape and colour - some seem almost a bit burned around the edges but that never affected the taste in any way.
You can eat them straight from the pack or re-heated from the microwave. The heated version is usually my favourite but make sure that you only heat the slices for 30 sec - if you heat them too much they'll go rock hard in no time and you can throw the whole thing away.
Freezing the bread is no problem; after 1 1/2 min in the microwave they are as good as fresh bread - but again, don't over heat as they frozen ones tend to get really hard.
The slices are quite thin and if you want to cut them open and fill them you might want to look for a different alternative. I usually fill pitta bread with salad and falafel but the Smartprice version is just too thin. Cutting a pocket in one is almost a mission impossible without destroying the whole slice. For me, that's definitely a big minus point.
However, they taste great! If you finally figured out how long they need in the toaster you are rewarded with very cheap pitta bread that tastes fresh, is soft and smells lovely!
My favourite is dipped in houmous which makes a not too unhealthy and quick snack.
----------------
Give it a try, this is definitely a good Smartprice product and you won't find any pitta bread that is cheaper. However, if you really want to fill it than it is worth to spend a bit more to get thicker slices.

- 26/10/09 It might just be me, but I found these went mouldy much quicker than the normal Asda Pitta Bread, although at the price they are you can afford to chuck one away! |
