Advantages: Cheap

Disadvantages: Hard potatoes, the mayo isn't nice, just tastes cheap

I don't often shop in Asda but sometimes when I'm passing I'll pop in and get a few bits. After my sister extolling the virtues of their Smart Price Potato Salad I decided to buy a tub to have with my dinner that evening, it only cost 28p for a 250g tub but to hear her talk it was made with fairy dust by Raymond Blanc!

It's not, it's absolute rubbish. My usual shop bought potato salad is the Tesco standard version which costs around 60p for a slightly larger tub and I'll be sticking with that one even at the higher price! To be fair, the Asda tub is well filled with the pleasant looking potato salad reaching almost to the rim of the tub - the ratio of potato to mayo is just right and while it doesn't exactly look creamy, it does look appetising in a bland way.

I scooped a fair amount from the tub onto my plate and had a sniff, nothing doing in the aroma stakes other than the fact of the mayo smelling slightly watery even though it didn't look it.

As soon as I ate some I realised just why this is the cheapo version of potato salad, it's awful and tastes exactly like it's worth 28p (or perhaps less). The small pieces of potato were so hard that they were practically raw, there wasn't a single soft piece of potato in there - the potatoes were also rather flavourless and relied too much on the mayo to liven them up. The problem is the mayo isn't good either, it's like a low fat version and doesn't have the rounded flavour that you need for potato salad. The mayo is also a little stickier than I'd like, although it is creamier than I originally thought it would be.

Overall this is just a very bland and unappetising potato salad. I threw half a tub away on the very day I bought it as I was fully aware that I wouldn't eat any more, the main problem for me is the hardness of the potatoes which made me feel almost sick as I was eating. I tried to soften them a little by crushing them slightly into the mayo with my fork, only this didn't work and I just ended up with hard slivers of potato instead of hard cubes.

Oh well, what do you expect for 28p? Never again!

Summary: Not the worst potato salad in the world, but nearly!

Every time I buy anything fresh of Asda's own brand (never mind smartprice) I am underwhelmed.

Homemade is so much better, this sounds rubbish!
