Advantages: Cheap and taste great
Disadvantages: None
I can't see how something like tinned sweetcorn would taste much different from name brand to cheap brand, which is why I buy Asda's Smartprice sweetcorn. It costs just 19p for a big tin and is obviously only available at Asda.
The sweetcorn comes in the white and green tin that is typical of the Smartprice range and the bits of corn are in salted water. When you open the lid, the kernels are brimming to the top and are very yellow in colour. For the price I would expect to find the odd 'dud' amongst the tin but as I drain them and pour them into a bowl, they all look very healthy and fresh to me.
If I don't have these as part of a main meal with meat then I will add them to a tuna pasta bake or put them in a lasagne. I also like to add it to tuna and then put that in a freshly baked roll at lunchtime. Adding them to a meal is a great way of getting one of your five a day.
The sweetcorn has a lovely sweet taste to it and when you bite into them the outer shell breaks and the whole thing explodes and spills out into your mouth. Although they are a savoury thing they are so sweet and it's one of only vegetables that Noah will eat without hiding them. He does however like to eat them one by one with his fingers which can take an age to finish.
I don't understand why anyone would want to pay more for something like these as they are definitely just as good as the more expensive sweetcorn tins that are on offer.
I would definitely recommend that you try these before you pick up another tin of your usually brand as I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised.
Summary: For just 19p you cant complain.

- 27/04/09 My granddaughter is 22 months and she also eats them one by one, which is sweet to watch but quite annoying sometimes when we've all finished our dinner and she still has a heap of sweetcorn to go! |
