Advantages: Convenient and easy to use
Disadvantages: Lack of taste
I bought three small tins of Asda sweetcorn as part of an online shopping basket some time ago. I know that tinned sweetcorn would never beat the taste and freshness of corn on the cob but I thought that a tin of sweet corn would come in handy now and again for salad or pasta dishes. In particular I often use it as part of a tuna and pasta dish, although a chicken, sweetcorn and mayonnaise sandwich is also a treat.
It had been a while since I'd bought tinned sweetcorn and before buying these tins I was wary that the sweetcorn might be overly sweet as I seemed to have a recollection of this in the past with a popular brand. However, upon opening a tin and tasting a spoonful of this particular brand, I discovered quite the opposite was true. Asda sweetcorn is exceedingly bland and has little sweetness. In terms of texture I found the grains of corn to be a little on the hard side.
I thought perhaps it might taste better with other ingredients after a little heat had been applied so I proceeded courageously to add it to my pasta and tuna dish. I found no improvement whatsoever and if anything the sweetcorn had detracted from the overall flavour of the dish. Even heating it up for a while (3 to 4 minutes is recommended) couldn't bring out any vibrancy to the flavour. In the end I had to force myself to swallow it down. One can only assume that the corn has been picked and tinned before it has properly ripened or it simply comes from poor agricultural produce. Asda claim that the sweet corn is grown in Britain.
In regard to storage, once a tin has been opened it is important to transfer the contents to an airtight container. This should then be kept in the fridge and consumed within 2 days.
It was many months before I managed to get rid of the extra two tins. Never shall I buy Asda sweetcorn again.
A 326g tin is currently on sale at Asda for 29p.
Summary: A smart price but not smart choice.
