Advantages: cheap, tasty and healthy

Disadvantages: doesn't look very nice and you have a lot of water in the tin

If you are a sweetcorn buff, you will know that a tin of green giant (despite their cute adverts) is quite pricey, costing sometimes up to £1 for the larger tins. Of course, when in the supermarket and you see this little beauty next to it for just 34p, you've got to ask yourself if the extra cost is really worth it. I'm happy to report, that in this case it is.

As with all the smart price products, the sweetcorn in the range has the usual branding with the green and white, which isn't that delightful to look at, but there IS a picture of the sweetcorn to lighten up the tin and at least it is very recognisable and easy to grab in a hurry. It can often be found at the bottom of the shelves, which is undoubtedly to lead us to the pricier brands... so beware!

I have compared the ingredients in this tin to the slightly more expensive ASDA sweetcorn packet, with the nicer packaging, and I can report that they are practically identical. I would say that the only difference is the quantity of the sweetcorn that you receive, and that the cheaper one has slightly more water. The sweetcorn itself however tastes absolutely fine to me, certainly no different to the other ASDA brands and perhaps a slightly lesser flavour than the Green Giant brand, but nothing unpleasant.

I now always buy this particular sweetcorn because while it isn't the most beautiful packaging, and yes you are paying for a lot of water inside the tin, it does work out cheaper in terms of the meals you can make with this ingredient. I would recommend it for anything from casseroles, to pasta bakes to sandwiches, it's extremely versatile.

Summary: a small difference you can make to your shopping list to make a big difference to your bank balance!
