Advantages: Cheap, adaptable
Disadvantages: Slightly off colour
Asda Smart Price Sweetcorn is something I have only recently got involved in. Its 34p for a 324g tin and thats enough to feed four people easily, as its a fairly large tin.
Ok so how does it look, well its not a looker by any means, in its ugly white and green packing, the tin screams discount brand, it looks cheap and immediately you realise you shouldn't expect too much from it, but you'd be wrong as I don't think its much different to more expensive brands in Sainsburys.
Because there are so many kernels in a tin, I found I could use halve in a pasta concoction I created and save the other half for the next night, when the tin was opened the sweetcorn lacks some of the colour of other brands, but once the tin was emptied and the corn given a wash it looked fine and tasted lovely and crunchy as a nice contrast in the pasta to soft tomatoes and tuna. The corn cooks quickly and is very adaptable. I used the other half the next night to use in Crab cakes, which involved cooking the remaining corn, mixing with crab meat and frying as crab cakes, it tasted no different to my regular sweet corn.
It looks grotty but as an adaptable and tasty store cupboard ingredient this is a decent buy, at 34p its great value and you'll easily get 2 servings from a tin for 2 people or 3 if you are on your own, it can be used in a variety of meals and its not as good quality as named brands but I think things like this don't need to be.
Summary: Its no looker but it tastes pretty good!
