Review of Asda Smart Price Sweetcorn.

This review covers canned sweetcorn from the Asda economy budget range, known as Smart Price. Along with many other supermarkets budget lines, Asda's Smart Price is a range of lower priced, simply packaged basic items. As I am restricted to a tight budget nowadays, I have been buying more and more products from supermarket own ranges.

~~The Product and Packaging~~

What is it? Self explanatory really, a can containing a net weight of 326g of sweetcorn kernels. The sweetcorn is presented in a plainly labeled, recyclable tin can. The label is basically white, with the Asda Smart Price logo in green and black. The label features a small image of a bowl of bright yellow sweetcorn kernels. Nutritional, cooking and Asda company information is also detailed on the label.
The can is not the ring pull type, so an tin opener will be required!

~~Appearance, Taste,Texture, Cooking Instructions and Usage~~

On opening the can, the yellow sweetcorn kernels look to be well packed, however they are a little smaller than those in the branded version that I used to buy. The corn is a good yellow colour, not artificial looking and the water that the corn floats in is a cloudy white.

The sweetcorn has a distinctly fresh taste in my opinion, very light and flavoursome. The texture is firm and reasonably crisp. We tend to eat our sweetcorn as a hot vegetable or mixed into a dish such as a casserole or pasta sauce. I feel that served cold, this Smart Price sweetcorn would be fine although perhaps not quite as crisp as the more well known brands.

The cooking advice on the can's label instructs users to heat the sweetcorn gently in a saucepan on the hob for 3-4 minutes or to heat in a covered bowl in a microwave for 1 minute.

Sweetcorn is a very versatile ingredient and one that I like to keep cans of on hand for adding to casseroles, pasta sauces, stir fries and as an addition to many dishes. I have to say that sweetcorn is the one vegetable that I actually prefer in the tinned form as opposed to fresh or frozen.

My grandchildren are particularly fond of sweetcorn and although I do not cater for children on a regular basis, I would think it is a useful way of getting youngsters to eat their vegetables as sweetcorn is easy to digest and the colour is attractive to children. In fact, Sweetcorn is one of the vegetables promoted in the governments 5-a-day initiative to promote healthier diets.

~~Ingredients, Price and Nutrition~~

No long list of ingredients for this product, simply sweetcorn and water. No added salt, sugar or other nasties!

The cost is a very reasonable 34p per can and a can of this stuff goes a long way, I can usually serve the two of us with half a can when used as a vegetable.

Sweetcorn is rich in Carbohydrates and natural Sugars and contains vitamins A, B3 and C. It also contains Folic Acid, Fibre and Protein.
Asda Smart Price Sweetcorn contains 53 calories per ¼ of a can and is suitable for vegetarians, there are no allergy warnings included on the product label.

~~Asda Contact Information~~

~~My Thoughts and Conclusion~~

A real bargain buy. Asda Smart Price Sweetcorn is a value for money, good quality product. I have been pleased with almost all the Smart Price range that I have tried, but this sweetcorn is the best so far. We have been buying it for several weeks now and have found the sweetcorn to be consistently good.
Sorry Jolly Green Giant, you can keep your sweetcorn, it's Asda to be Asda sweetcorn for me!

I would highly recommend this to other consumers.

Thank you for reading.
