Advantages: taste good
Disadvantages: so much sugar and fat
Since moving to England I love apple pies with hot custard, it's just the best pudding in the world - definitely at the same step as Italian ice cream and austrian apple strudel if you ask me.
Being a big fan of the Tesco Value range I started to give ASDA Smartprice a try too and I really wasn't disappointed. The pies are lovely and I cannot taste a difference between the cheapies and a more expansive brand.

Packing
The packing is quite minimalistic, a plastic tray with cellophane wrapped around the pies. That is actually quite good, you can see the pies and don't have to have the disappointment at home when you realise that they are broken or damaged.
In the front is a label in the typical ASDA Smartprice green & white and on the back is another label with the nutrition info and the ingredients.
I'm ok with the basic packing, I can see the pies before I buy them and it's not too much (or indeed) any useless design on it.

Nutrition
Oh god, I wish I'd never looked at the back of the box! One single, tiny pie contains 12.6g sugar and 7.2g of fat, that makes together 170 calories a pie! And I could easily eat two of them with custard for pudding.

Look & Taste
I remember that I was a bit disappointed when I opened the pack for the first time ever, no sweet apple smell, nothing. I love it when you smell the sour apples, the buttery pasty and the sweet sauce, unfortunately not so with the Smartprice pies.
The look is ok, light golden brown with a light dusting of sugar on top. They do look a bit lighter than the apple pies you can see in bakeries but not pale white as if they hadn't baked well enough.
There are two ways to eat the pies, cold and straight from the box or hot. I prefer them hot, it just takes one minute in the microwave till they are nice and hot. Then you can actually smell them, a lovely sweet smell, not too much of apple, more of butter.
The pastry is surprisingly thick around the outside of the pie. I expected them to be soggy but they were absolutely fine. The apple pieces inside are quite big - what surprised me as I thought there'd only be tiny pieces blended in the sauce.
The sauce is very sweet, a bit too sweet if in combination with custard for my taste. On the other side that's really nice when you enjoy the pies straight from the pack without heating them.

Price & Value
36 pence for 6 pies is amazing. I couldn't believe it at first; in the bakery I'm currently working in we are selling apple pies of roughly the same size for 79 pence a piece. The ASDA Smartprice box works out as an unbeatable 6 pence per pie - that's a cheap pudding!
They taste good, they are cheap - what can I want more?! Well, maybe less sugar and fat.
