Advantages: A cheap snack

Disadvantages: None for the price.

The Asda Smartprice Swiss roll does offer good value for 13p, although hubby will gladly eat a whole Asda Swiss roll in one go.
Maybe not the first cake I would choose, i`m rather partial to the Cadbury`s chocolate covered Swiss roll myself.

You would think that the Swiss Roll originated from Switzerland, Apparently not, it is an Eastern European cake.
In the past I have made Swiss rolls myself using a fat-less sponge mixture. There are drawbacks to making Swiss rolls. You bake a fat-less sponge in a flat baking tin and when it is out of the oven and three parts cooled you then turn it out onto a clean tea towel, spread it with the filling of your choice, maybe jam or lemon curd and then roll it gently using the tea towel to hold the sponge in place while you form the roll.
As you roll the sponge you inevitably find that the outer surface cracks, so I always end up dusting it with icing sugar to disguise the motley looking top.

The Asda Swiss rolls are mass produced so they don't encounter those problems.
The Asda Smartprice Swiss roll comes wrapped in a plastic sleeve that incorporates the Smart Price colours and design. The lettering states that it is an Asda Smartprice chocolate Swiss roll and a `V` is stamped on the packaging which lets you know that Vegetarians can enjoy it too.
This is a no frills job , as you take the Swiss roll from the packet it seems small, but for 13p you can`t expect much more.
The cake does smell of chocolate and it has a firm, close but soft texture. Inside of the Swiss roll is pure white sweet vanilla cream which tastes artificial and synthetic but its not at all unpleasant.
A two portion cake at the most by my reckoning, if I divided it into four I'm sure I would get some dirty looks.
As you eat the chocolate sponge it does tend to coat your teeth, the slightly sticky consistency makes you constantly run your tongue around to clean the inside of your mouth, the cream tends to dissolve, quickly doing a vanishing act.
You don't have too much time to devote to analysing the flavour because the piece only takes a couple of chews and it has gone.

Asda state that the product has no artificial colours or flavours and contains no hydrogenated fat.
The Swiss roll contains gluten, wheat, eggs, milk and soy beans.
The whole cake contains about 300 calories.

Are they worth buying?
Yes! I think they are well worth their 13p, the classier Swiss rolls and roulades on the market will surely look down their noses at this one, but im afraid you cant have brand snobbery on a tight budget.
If you have a couple of children one would make an ideal after school snack.
They also do a raspberry Swiss roll which makes a good inexpensive trifle base.
I know my niece used Swiss rolls as a base for her sons first birthday cake, a Thomas the Tank Engine cake which was very effective but maybe if you were going to use these Asda Smart Price cakes you would need to sandwich a fair few together.
A piece of Swiss roll with some hot custard poured over the top of it makes a tasty quick and filling pudding or even a slice with some ice cream would be good.

OK, this isn't posh nosh but for 13p it represents good enough value and I am sure that Asda sell plenty of them.

Summary: A cheap after school snack
