Advantages: tastes ok, very cheap
Disadvantages: doesn't compare to premium products, but I doubt you'd expect it to
This is yet another product I bought after reading a review of it on Dooyoo. I was doing an online shop anyway and thought for the price of just 13p it wouldn't be the end of the world if I didn't like it. I do generally love cakes, and whilst I sometimes make my own, I don't always have the time or inclination, so I do usually go for shop bought cakes instead, and if I can find some cheaper ones I like all the better.
This is a chocolate flavoured swiss roll with a white creamy vanilla flavoured filling. The first thing that struck me when it arrived was how small it was. Swiss roll is not a product I buy regularly, however I would have expected it to be slightly bigger in both length and width - then again, I suppose considering how cheap it was, I shouldn't have had too many expectations!
Other than being small the swiss roll looks quite nice. It's a rich dark brown colour, and there is plenty of white filling. I had sort of expected that there would only be a scraping of the vanilla cream because of the price, but there is a surprisingly generous amount.
The taste of this is surprisingly nice. Of course, compared to more expensive, luxury brands it's not quite in the same league, but it's by no means horrible, and I'd be happy to switch to this one if I needed to save a few pence.
The cake is fairly dry, which I would say is the main downside of this, but it's sufficiently sweet and chocolatey tasting to satisfy my sweet tooth. The vanilla filling is also very nice, with a smooth, creamy consistency that breaks up the dryness of the cake somewhat. Also, as I mentioned, you get a pretty decent amount of the vanilla filling too.
It also contains no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fat, which is nice to know from a budget product, as I suppose you would expect it to be filled with all sorts of rubbish to keep the costs down.
Per ¼ swiss roll - and to be honest, I do think that's fair as it's so small you probably won't get more than 4 decent sized slices from it:
81 calories
0.9g protein
12.2g carbohydrate
3.2g fat
Overall, I thought this was OK, and a lot better than I was expecting, as at just 13p I was not really sure I would like it. Compared to premium brands, there is no contest - do not buy this and expect any sort of luxury - but if, like me, you are trying to stick to a budget but still want your chocolate cake fix, then this product is fine.
Summary: Not as bad as I had expected!
