Advantages: good taste, very cheap
Disadvantages: too much fat, too many calories
So far I haven't had the best experience with ASDA Smartprice products and at first I was not too sure if I should try the Smartprice crumpets or not - after all they are only 6 pence per piece.
Thank god I did give it a try; they are absolutely delicious, soft with a lovely texture and of course incredibly cheap.
The crumpets come in a small pack of 6 pieces for 36 pence all together. They are a bit thinner than other (more expensive) brands, but they surely have the same lovely pale golden colour.
Depending on how crispy you like your crumpets they take roughly 1 minute in the toaster and maybe 2 if they are frozen. Try to aim for a nice golden brown top but make sure you don't bake them too much, the underside gets easily hard. If you think that you cannot finish the whole pack in a few days then don't worry, they freeze well and you won't taste a difference when re-heated.
The crumpets taste lovely, not overly sweet but good enough to eat them on their own without butter or honey. Ok, that might be a bit exaggerated, I would never eat a crumpet without topping but that depends on your preferences of course.
The texture is very nice, soft with big pores which makes the whole thing a not too heavy snack.
Even with tons of honey they don't go soggy but stay rather crispy on the outside.
My favourite is certainly with loads of nutella on top :-)
Which leads me to the obvious point, the calorie count. A crumpet on its own is not too bad with just 62 calories per piece but don't overdo it with toppings if you are on a diet.
There's no need to spend more money on crumpets; I've never been able to taste a difference between the Smartprice and a branded version.
This is a product I can highly recommend and it definitely deserves 10 out of 10!
