There's nothing like real mashed potato but I always think it tastes better in the winter made with 'old' (not mouldy - 'old' as opposed to 'new!) spuds. However it can be a mucky & time-consuming job & somehow there never seems to be enough to go round even if you fill a big pan. There's also the cost of gas/electricity & the washing up.... So, if I'm not entertaining or cooking something in a hurry I sometimes reach for the instant sort - I've tried Mash & Mr Mash plus Tesco's Value but I have to say that Asda's is pretty good as long as you add seasoning, a little milk, a knob of butter or a handful of chives or chopped spring onions as it ... I love mashed potato, but I rarely make my own using REAL potatoes. The only occasions where I make the effort is if we have guests for tea. I have tried loads of different brands of instant mash potato and almost always resort to the cheapest on the shelves, which is inevitably the smartprice / value ranges. When I last bought the Asda Smartprice Instant Mash Potato I paid just 18p for a 120g bag. There is 373 calories and 1g fat per 100g. This mash generally does 4 servings for us which is great value. The instructions state to mix with boiling water, so it is easy peasy. Depending on what we are eating it with I sometimes add milk or a ... Read the complete review

I like to make the majority of my meals from scratch but sometimes I have neither the time nor the inclination to 'do it myself' so I like to keep some tinned products or packets in the cupboard for quick & easy meals that are still relatively healthy. This instant mash comes in powdered form and to make just measure out the required amount as per the instructions on the back of the packet & you just need to add some boiled water to this mix. It's very simple to make and you can make it to the consistency that you like. To give the mash less of an artificial taste I usually add a few knobs of butter as well as some salt & pepper and I ... I don't think any packet mix compares to real mashed potato, but I do tend to keep a packet or two in the cupboard as a standby for when I inevitably run out of real potatoes! I normally buy Somerfield's own, but it's not brilliant, and when I was shopping online I decided to try ASDA's smart price version, as I'm trying to save money, and have been trying a lot of their stuff recently. Like all of the smart price range this product is packaged very cheaply. It comes in a green and white packet which has a picture of a kettle on the front, I guess to show the fact that you just need to add water. The instructions state that you should pour a pint of ... I don't tend to eat Mashed Potato as part of a meal on it's own, but I do like to make Shephard's Pie, but i'm too lazy to peel, boil and mash Potato to put on top. I've always reached for a pach of Smash, as I think thesedays it tastes like "real" Potato, but I decided to try this the other week and report my finding. Part of the Asda budget range, which is called Smartprice. This cost a bargain 18p for the pack, which when made up made a good mound of Mash. The pack size is 120g. The packaging is alright. It is a white pack which has the green Smart Price writing on it. No frills packaging. The cooking instructions are on the back as is ... Read the complete review
