Advantages: Cheap and quick
Disadvantages: In salt water
These new potatoes from Asda are a great little find. They cost just 22p for 550g and I always have a tin in the cupboard for a quick convienient addition to meals.
When you open the tin you will see that the potatoes are a nice cream colour because they have already been peeled which is one of the most attractive things about tinned new potatoes. I hate peeling mormal sized potatoes as it is but I despise peeling new potatoes. They are so small and really fiddly to peel and it just takes me so long so buying these just cuts out that inconvienience for me.
The amount of potatoes in each tin does tend to vary. Sometimes I find that I get 8-10 big potatoes and other times there are a lot more but there are much smaller ones. I do get a bit disapointed when I see that there are big ones in the tin because I find that the smaller ones cook better and are easier to eat.
The one thing I don't particularly like about these potatoes is the fact that they sit in salted water. I hate adding any salt to my meals because I fell that there is enough salt in day to day products as it is without dropping more into my cooking. I wouldn't give these potatoes to my little boys because of that fact.
These are so easy to cook in that you pop them in a saucepan and heat them on a medium heat for around five minutes. They heat up really well and quickly and you don't get hot and cold spots even with the larger potatoes. They are nice and soft but not to the point where they end up like mash potato when you are stirring them.
I tend to eat these alongside a bit of salmon and salad and they taste great with some butter drizzled on top. If I am feeling lazy I will make a potato salad out of them although they do need to be drained quite well for this as you can end up with a watery salad else. The other thing I like to do it to cut them into smaller pieces and cook them with bacon, cheese and white wine. This makes a great accompaniment to any main meal and taste great.
Over all I would highly recommend these potatoes as they taste great and are simple, quick and easy to cook. A definate essential for my cupboard.
Summary: A cupboard essential.
