Advantages: Cheap, fast food

Disadvantages: A bit waxy in texture

I sometimes use tinned potatoes when I am making a stew, or a casserole because it's fast and easy to do. Previously I have been buying branded ones, believing that I was getting better quality. However, when I saw these for 22p at Asda, I decided to give them a try.

The green and white can is 345g and is full to the top with potatoes and covered in salt water. The ring pull on the top of the can makes it easy to open.

The first thing I noticed when I opened these was a brown mark on a potato at the top of the can. This is quite likely to put me off altogether when it comes to cheap food, but I decided to investigate further before I made my mind up.

I drained the potatoes and rinsed them to get rid of the salt water and the rest of them seemed to be fine.

There was a mixture of sizes in the can from a little bigger than a marble, up to the size of a small egg. This wasn't a problem for me as I wanted to add them to a stew.

The potatoes are a bit waxy looking but taste wise they were fine. They are not the same as a freshly cooked potato but at the price they are good value.

I have also used them with chopped spring onions to make superfast potato salad. This works amazingly well.

I would certainly recommend these as a stand by in the kitchen cupboard. They are reasonable quality and I won't be going back to my branded tin potatoes.

Another Asda Smartprice product that is both cheap and decent quality.

Summary: Great value

I love potatoes but I'd never use tinned ones. You need some time to make the stew, why don't you put fresh potatoes in from the beginning?

Can't remember the last time I had tinned potatoes, but I suppose they're worth having in the back of your cupboard as an emergency backup! :o) x
