Advantages: Cheap
Disadvantages: Tastes like sewage
I must admit that I was not expecting much before I opened this, and I was not disappointed.
Think of soup.
Think of soap.
Think of soapy vegetable soup that somebody, for a laugh, has bunged a load of chili powder in and just given it a quick stir. You have then got this sauce.
I know it is just supposed to be a base, and a cheap one at that, but it really is foul. It is one of those sauces that you just add meat to, simmer and then serve. I have people who I hate that I would not serve this to.
I expected at least a few kidney beans in it (and according to the can, they are part of the ingredients), but did not find a single one. In fact, apart from a few lumps of tomato, there were no identifiable bits in it at all. It looked like it had been blended, so the kidney beans may have been in there as a thickening agent.
Being an alternative kind of chap, I decided to do Sausage Chili. I used Asda Butchers Choice sausage, and fried them off a little before adding the sauce, and simmering for 20 mins. I poured the unusual smelling concoction onto my bed of rice and started to eat.
The chilli hit me immediately. It tastes as if the powder was put in at the last minute, as it had not been given time to blend in with the other ingredients. Chilli needs to be simmered for a long time to get past the heat and to the flavour. Obviously, Asda had just thrown it in the tin as-is. The chilli was far too strong. I can take a fair bit of heat, but the was just raw and nasty.
The second taste that hit me was soap. There was a definite soapy aftertaste with it. Not sure if it was intentional, but at least I know they keep there pans clean now!!!
I ended up hooking my sausage out, wiping the foul sauce off with a piece of bread, smothering it with BBQ sauce and having a sandwich instead.
This mess cost 35p for 420g. If you want a quick chiili style sauce, follow this recipe that I have created. Nearly as cheap, and a hell of a lot better.:
Chop and fry 1 onion and 2 cloves of garlic till golden. Add 2 Teaspoons of ground Cumin, 2 sliced green chillis and ½ teaspoon chilli powder (Add more if you like it hot). Fry for another 3 minutes, then add 2 tins Tomatoes (break them up if they are whole. Simmer for 20 minutes, add 1 tin drained and washed kidney beans, and simmer for another 20 mins. Add whatever meat or veg you want, then simmer until cooked.
If you use Smartprice Kidney beans and Tomatoes, the whole recipe costs about 80p, makes twice as much as the cook-in sauce and is one hell of a lot nicer.
Summary: Horrible. Better off making your own!
