Advantages: Cheap.

Disadvantages: Poor tasting, thin consistency and leaves a horrid aftertaste.

Just the other day on a trip to Asda, I was talked into economising by my good friend who insisted that many of the Asda smart price items were as good or almost as good as the big named and well known products.

I have not had the time to try many of the things I bought but already I don't hold out much hope for the others after trying the smart price tomato ketchup. I am very much a Heinz girl when it comes to tomato ketchup although I have to admit that I can and do use the Branstons version too.

Both the Branstons and the Heinz are thick and very, very tasty, however the smart price version from Asda lacked both the taste and the consistency of the afore mentioned two.

The smart price ketchup is a bit watery and it is far, far sweeter than the other two ketchups mentioned, the tomato taste and the tang you get with the Heinz version is as good as gone, it seems to have been replaced by a sort of sweet fruity taste that does have a hint of tomato to it but only just.

The main problem for me is the aftertaste though, it seems to leave a bitter aftertaste that also seems to dry the mouth out and it is really not very pleasant.

There is a far higher tomato content to the Heinz version which you can clearly see from the ingredients and I can only assume that the additives in the smart price one is what leaves the aftertaste.

All in all for 29p per bottle I can understand people using it to save money but if you really enjoy your ketchup then it is false economy and you would be better just doing without if you cannot afford the more expensive ones.

Summary: I would rather go without!
