Advantages: great taste, very cheap

Disadvantages: none

Tortilla Chips is something I always have at home; not only great as a snack in front of the TV but also a good ingredient for Mexican dishes. I got quickly used to the lightly salted flavour and prefer it now over stronger flavourings like cheese or chili.

The ASDA tortilla chips totally convinced me - they are crunchy, tasty and not greasy at all!

Packing

The tortillas come in the well-known green/white ASDA Smartprice package. All important Nutrition info is printed on the back.
You can see the crisps through the clear bag which can be quite a temptation when you actually don't want to buy them. The plastic is very clear and doesn't look greasy or blurred on the inside.

Ingredients & Nutrition

Tortilla chips are not made from potato as normal crisps but are made from maize - in general known as corn. A feeling of Mexico in your kitchen!
The ASDA lightly salted tortillas are baked and flavoured with sunflower oil and salt.

On the front of the pack ASDA informs us that no artificial colours, flavourings and hydrogenated fats were used.

With 487kcal per 100 gram they contain surprisingly few calories for crisps. They still are not really healthy food but compared to other savory snacks it is quite good. They do however contain quite a lot of fat and carbohydrates.

All per 100g which is half of the bag:
Protein - 6.4g
Carbohydrate - 62.9g
Fat - 23.3g
Fibre - 4.6g
Sodium - 0.37g
Salt - 0.9g

The Daily guidance amounts are not given on the pack.
The allergy advice is that it may contain traces of nuts and seeds. The tortilla chips are suitable for Vegetarians.

Look & Taste

The small dark-yellow triangles look already alluringly crunchy in their bag. I love their dark colour, they seem to scream 'hey we are crunchy and well baked!' There's nothing worse than pale tortilla chips that get soggy as soon as you dip them in sauce.
They are advertised as 'lightly salted' but I think they could use a bit more salt - but I really love the salty taste so I guess it's just me. The flavour is very even, that means that you don't have very salty or very bland bits.

They are crunchy and don't get soggy if you eat them with salsa sauce, even after baking them in the oven with salsa and cheese on top they stayed lovely crunchy.

As they are not to strongly flavoured the tortilla chips are the perfect base for many dishes and not only nice eaten on their own. They are especially nice with salsa sauce as you can enjoy their crunchiness and the flavour of the salsa.

Price & Value

I'm a big fan of own brand products in general and the Smartprice Tortilla Chips are no exception. They come in a 200 gram bag for the unbeatable price of 50p.

That's basically the only thing I would change, 200g is quite a lot if you eat them alone and I always end up with loads of half full packs of crisps in my cupboard.

In my opinion they are worth every penny and highly recommendable.

8/10 for taste and price

Clothes pegs on the twisted end of the packet helps keep them fresh - but you probably do this already!
