Advantages: Taste lovely, cost little
Disadvantages: They're a sweet and they''re morish
Whilst in Asda the other night with my parents we wandered down the sweet aisle to pick out something to munch that night. That was when I spotted these Asda Whirly Bites. I'd seen them before whilst shopping and kept meaning to pop a packet in my basket but never quite got round to it for some reason. It was therefore high time I tried them and at a cost of £1 for 10 I thought it was a pretty good deal.
Asda Whirly Bites are basically Milky Way's but of course Asda's variety and much cheaper. They come individually wrapped in a bright blue wrapper and then the ten are wrapped together in a packet of the same colour. The main packet then has a picture of the product itself in the middle and then 'Hands Off My Whirly Bite' is written or more scrawled if I'm honest in black. The colour of the packet makes the product really eye catching but it does have a slightly tacky feel and is definitely aimed towards children. All in all though the packaging doesn't really matter because it does it's purpose.
The chocolate 'Whirly Bite' like I have said is roughly like a Milky Way and in many respects looks like one. It is rectangular in shape, about 8cm x 3cm x 2cm. It's just the right size therefore for a quick snack and perfectly suitable for the small hands of children. On first glance all you can see is a milk chocolate rectangle with a ripple on top but when you bite into it and look at it end on iit is possible to see the thick white whipped nougat in the middle. It is also at this point that you realise that the milk chocolate covering is actually of a decent thickness.
Furthermore it is at this point that you realise that the Whirly Bite you are peering at also tastes rather good too. The whipped nougat is thick, sticky and sweet, exactly how it should be and tastes really creamy and delicious. The chocolate also has a very creamy taste but isn't as sweet as the nougat, which gives you quite a contrast. On top of this the chocolate is quite solid whereas the nougat is relatively soft. This again gives you a good texture contrast.
For all you that like to know the calorie values of food products I have reproduced the values per bar below:
Calories - 117
Protein - 1.0g
Carbohydrate - 18.8g
Of which sugars - 17.6g
Fat - 4.2g
Of which saturates - 2.4g
Fibre - 0.2g
Sodium - 0.10g
It is also worth noting here that 'Whirly Bites' are suitable for Vegetarians and are free from artificial colours and flavours. They do however contain soya, eggs and milk and may contain nuts.
All in all I can't really fault these lovely bite sized sweets. They're perfect for small hands and small mouths as well as large hands and large mouths and provide a very tasty treat. I will admit that the packaging can look a little tacky but to be honest I don't really care because the product itself tastes great and that's all that really matters for me. I personally could easily eat a few of these in one go and have to resist the urge to open another the second I've swallowed the last.
Summary: They taste like a Milky Way but cost half as much
