Asda Mild French Mustard
by xxfoxyredxx
I love nothing more than a nice home cooked steak but there is one thing I have to have with it or it doesn't taste right and that is French mustard...in fact I'm rather addicted to the stuff and love it on sorts of meats and even use it to marinade meats in under the grill and the likes.
This costing 45p from Asda ended up my ... trolley the other week along with some above mentioned steak for mine and my flatmate's tea. I thought that was a reasonable price though I am used to paying a little more for more well known brands but in these times of tightening our belts a little I decided that it was worth a trial run and it was of a generous size.
The Packaging:
The glass jar is see-through with a gold twist on/off lid to the top of it and holds 185g of the mustard. On the front of the jar we are told that it is Asda French Mustard 'Mild & Distinctive' and that it contains no artificial colours, flavours or hydrogenated fat and the size is stated (as I have listed already). On the back of the jar other information listed includes ingredients and allergy advice, there is a nutritional chart shown as well as storage advice given and contact details are given for Asda. Nice enough, easy to open and close jar this is and it is informative enough too.
The French Mustard:
A rich brown in colour, this is a very smooth and easy to spread mustard but with body so it really isn't to runny. On warm/hot foods it doesn't melt too badly and taste wise it tastes slightly hot and sour with a natural sweetness and it tastes rather hot as this has a lot of mustard seeds in it and the tartness comes from the spirit vinegar.
This is a very zingy sort of mustard due to the amount of vinegar within it and all in all this is a great value product and of good quality!

Asda Smart Price Lemon Curd
by Bellroyd
Lemon Curd is only an occasional purchase for us. My wife doesn't like it, so I get to eat it all.
Most recently I bought some of this to use in a baking recipe - just a nice sandwich cake with lemon curd as the filling rather than butter cream - made a pleasant change and the strong taste of the lemon curd was able to cover ... up any inadequacies in the cake itself.
As a child, well before the days of Smart Price ranges, I used to sometimes get this from Mum when she made us an assortment of sweet things for a weekend tea. I carried on this tradition with our two lads, when they would get a really varied assortment of sarnies, pastries, bikkies and cakes as a tasty and rather unhealthy treat.
If it isn't for baking, my new best use, this is nice in a sandwich, loaded on thick. For those who don't like bits or lumps in their jam, this is a good alternative as it is thick and spreads well - a different texture from jam altogether.
This was only 22p when I bought it from Asda recently and this is an excellent price for such a product. In the 411g jar there are about 1200 calories so a modest scrape of this on your bread isn't too bad - everything in moderation they say.
This is 47% sugar and apart from the long list of other chemical sounding ingredients, the remainder is largely eggs.
It's quite easy to make your own lemon curd, but at this price, it isn't worth it in my view. Once you open this you do have to consume it within 6 weeks - this is never an issue in our house. The level in the jar always seems to reduce quite steadily. Surely it can't all be down to me?
Makes a pleasant tangy change from jam. Nice on a crumpet. Recommended. Read the complete review |

Asda Smart Price Golden Syrup
by xxfoxyredxx
One of my vices in life is pancakes. I adore them and thankfully my bestmate/flatmate makes up amazing ones for us rather often. Of course you can have lots of different toppings and fillings within them and on them and that but I always ALWAYS go with golden syrup and up until recently I always purchased the good ... stuff!
However with recently trying to tighten my belt (well not literally or I guess I wouldn't be buying this at all lol!) I decided to pick up a more economy option when browsing the shelves in Asda. This costing 77p a jar suited me and my purse well and I thought it had to be worth a trial run. However I didn't notice that a slightly smaller 'tin' of Lyles Golden syrup was only 23p more at the time and had I of done I would have bought that as its my personal favourite!
The Packaging:
The golden syrup comes in a see-through glass jar that has a gold coloured twist on/off lid to the top of it concealing a large hole. Around the jar there is a white and bright green label and on the front of it we are of course told that it is Asda 'Smart Price' Golden Syrup 'Partially inverted refiners syrup' and that it is suitable for Vegetarians and is 680g in weight (and the only size this is avaiable to purchase in to the best of my knowledge). Other infrmation listed towards the back of the jar includes ingredients and storage advice, there is a full nutritional chart shown and contact details for Asda are listed. It is a cheap looking, chunky jar though good to be able to see the syrup though it and of course the information listed is informative as it needs to be!
The Golden Syrup Itself:
As the name suggests this is a golden colour and it is transparent, it is runny but with a bit of body to it and easy to get out of the jar. Sticky with a sweet, sugary and with a traditional syrupy smell I find this rather runny compared to better quality and named brands.
Taste wise this is ok really. To me I have more of a problem with its consitency to be honest than the actual sugary flavour. Yes it tastes like sweet syrup and really is really sweet but in a very natural way. Its smooth too however when this meets warm/hot foods the runny consitency it has to begin with really melts bad like water and doesn't look good and is right messy.
To me although it tastes okish it isn't thick enough for me and I feel that this should be a pourable syrup in a bottle or something. I would buy this only again to say cook with...I'm sure it has its uses but this isn't for me and my beloved pancakes sadly!
