I remember my first trip to France, when I was 12 . A bunch of rowdy British almost- teens running riot in the hypermarkets, chased by teachers trying to stop us buying anything inappropriate . I didn't buy anything too naughty, but I did come back with a net of Mini Babybel cheeses!

Never before had I seen something so wonderful, so exotic, so brilliant as individually wrapped mini cheeses. I took one bite of these exotic delights, and I was smitten .

Over the years Babybel have become popular over here too . No longer so exotic and mysterious, since you can find them on the shelves of every major supermarket nowadays, and often see more than one variety. The original has always been my favourite though .

You buy these small, round, red wax encased cheeses in nets of six . I know some places used to sell them individually, but I haven't seen them packaged like this for a long time .They are small, about an inch in diameter, and each cheese is 20g in weight . They are encases in shiny red plastic, with the white and red Babybel logo . Peeling off this shiny plastic, you'll then see a bright red wax casing, with a little tab to enable you to peel the cheese, and this is very easy to do , leaving you with a pale cream coloured little wheel of cheese .

Biting into is, the texture is very soft and pliant, and they have a lovely mild creamy taste . It's not an overtly cheesy cheese - it's very subtly flavoured.

Per 100g, there are 299 calories, and 23g of fat . Bearing in mind that each cheese is only 20g though, so you're not going to be eating all that at once!

These are perfectly sized to go into lunchboxes, or to slip into a handbag for a sneaky snack whilst out and about, and being individually was sealed makes them fun for kids, who love peeling these cheeses, or at least my daughter is .

Reassuringly, the packaging assures us that this is made from real, not processed cheese, and also states that these are suitable for vegetarians .

I love these little cheesy nibbles, 5 stars!
