Advantages: Satisfies both chocolate and biscuit cravings.
Disadvantages: Very expensive, not many in a packet.
Bahlsen Choco Leibniz are what I consider 'posh biscuits' as they're roughly £1.45 per 125g packet (£1.16/100g), which makes them one of the most expensive biscuits on the market. But we always seem to have some in the house so I guess my fiancé's Mum stocks up on them when they're on special offer.
These biscuits come in a box and within that box the biscuits sit in a plastic tray that is shrink-wrapped in clear plastic. I'm sure all this packaging is meant to stop the biscuits from breaking, but I think they're tough little cookies (excuse the pun!) and could withstand just a plastic wrapping like all the other biscuits.
Anyway, as I said, we've been getting these biscuits for quite a while now and I was sure that you got 12 biscuits in a pack - 4 biscuits in 3 separate compartments of the plastic tray. Well the pack I've got in front of me now only had 9 biscuits (well, now there's only 6 left because I've scoffed a couple!). There are still 3 compartments to the tray and I don't think they've changed the size of the biscuits, so I conclude that they've made the tray shallower, hence why I never really noticed the reduction in biscuits! Sneaky biscuit people!
So this shock finding has made them an even more indulgent biscuit than ever before. Actually, when I say 'biscuit' I'm not sure if that's even the right term to use, as on the box it states "more chocolate than a biscuit". You see these choco-biscuit delights are smothered in a heavy layer of dark chocolate, which satisfies even the most ferocious of chocolate cravings. The packet says the chocolate makes up 63% of this sweet treat, whilst the rest is a lovely butter biscuit.
The biscuit part is a crispy type biscuit, rather than a crumbly type, and I like the snap of it as I bite through the thick chocolate. The biscuit is quite plain in taste and not too sweet or buttery and this compliments the chocolate very well, as that is really the star of the show. Both the chocolate and the biscuit parts have the name of the product embossed on them, which is a nice touch (but not something you'd really notice as you quickly shove it in your mouth!).
I'm not the type of person who could eat a whole packet of biscuits (unless maybe we're talking about Jaffa Cakes, but then are they really biscuits either?!) and 1 or 2 of these dark chocolate biscuit goodies is enough of a sweet thing to have with my cup of afternoon tea. That's a good thing too, as 2 biscuits contains 138 calories 7.1g of fat (4.5g saturated fat).
On the Bahlsen website it says they are "the name for the premier continental biscuit family" and they are "the market leaders for cakes and biscuits in Germany". They have definitely succeeded in producing an indulgent product and I can't think of an equivalent biscuit that can match it, as it's quite unique and therefore it always feels a bit special to open a packet of these.
Available from all good supermarkets.
