Advantages: Quick and easy

Disadvantages: Nutritionally lacking, taste bad

My nephew is a fussy little lad, his favourite foods are supernoodles and chicken. I bought some barbecue beef noodles when they were on special offer for him but he only eats the curry flavoured ones. I had them for my lunch today for two reasons, firstly I've got a bit of a bug and some stodgy comfort food sounded like a good idea and secondly because I'm trying to use up all the food in my cupboards.

Super Noodles are made by Batchelors, cost around 39p for a packet and come in a range of flavours including mild curry, barbecue beef, sweet and sour and chinese chow mein.

They are easy to cook, simply put the noodle block, flavouring sachet and 300ml of water into a pan and simmer for 4 minutes stirring occasionally until the water is absorbed. I always add more water for my nephew as he prefers to have loads of liquid sloshing around the bottom of the bowl, in fact he stands over me when I am cooking them for him to make sure I am getting it right.

Once these are cooked, you are left with a bowl of wiggly looking noodles in a pale brown colour. Theres a few green flecks on the noodles, presumably flecks of something from the flavour sachet. They have a soft texture, a bit like spaghetti. The taste didn't remind me of either barbecues or beef. They were a bit salty and strangely a bit like chicken stock cubes. They left an unpleasant aftertaste and an oily feeling in my mouth.

I was staggered when I read the calorie information on the back. !/2 the pack which is recommended as a side dish contains 262 calories. That means if I had eaten the whole packet as I was intending it would be a staggering 524 calories for lunch. Predictably, they are also really high in fat and salt.

I used to like these when I was younger. They are actually much nicer to eat uncooked, simply break the noodles into pieces, sprinkle on a bit of the sachet and eat like that. They are lovely and crunchy, a bit like crisps.

I'll still buy the curry noodles for when I'm looking after my nephew, believe me I have tried to get him to eat properly in the past but it is just not my battle to fight but I won't be eating them again myself.

*Update*

I had my nephew round for dinner again today. After determining that he liked none of the foods in the house, I sent him out to the shop for some super noodles. The village shops dont sell his favourite curry ones so he came back with the chicken ones. These are actually really nice. They tasted really like chicken with loads of herbs and seemed to have a much nicer texture, but thats maybe because I didnt overcook these ones. I'm still not going to be eating them again myself but I felt like my review on the BBQ ones was a bit unfair after tasting the chicken ones.

Summary: Not super

I agree with you about the chicken ones, I think they taste a bit more natural and the only ones i will eat, if i eat them at all. I used to eat them a lot when I was in my teens though. great anecdoctal review, thanks
