Bath Bun ... records show that nearly 943 691 "London Bath Buns " were consumed during the five month exhibition. The invention of the Bath bun has been attributed to Dr. Oliver whose patients loved them so much that their waistlines expanded at an alarming rate so they were quickly replaced with the savoury Bath Oliver biscuit (see below). The buns were originally a brioche or rich egg and butter dough topped with crushed caraway seed comfits. Today's Bath bun is made from a sweet yeast dough and is sprinkled with crushed sugar after baking and often has a sugar lump in the centre of the bun.

Express Review on Bath Bun

I love Bath Buns. They are my favourite cake, along with Eccles cakes. It seems nowhere sells them though, only perhaps an independant bakers which there are fewer and fewer of these days. We have to make do with chains such as Greggs, and if they don't sell you're favourite cake then it's tough luck lol. Pretty sad really as we're losing all the diversity and ending up with uniform everything. A pasty or cake in greggs will always have the same uniform flavour no matter where you are in the country, how boring :S. This has become less of a review of the cake and more of a rant lol. But yes, bath buns are delicious, friuty buns with crushed chunks of sugar on top. EAT ONE NOW, if you can find one that is :P
