Chutneys are a big thing in the British cuisine, possibly because of the Raj influence (though Indian chutneys are completely different). Over the years I have tried quite a few chutneys, most of them home-made or almost (i.e. sold in farm shops, market stalls etc.) and recently bought quite a few different ones. Baxter are a big brand in Scotland, and as I like both onions (especially caramelised onions) and cranberries (in fact I love cranberries) I bought a jar of this chutney in Tesco. I think that chutney is making something of a come back, years ago it was highly popular and a few jars of home made chutney could be found in many larders up and down the country. Then all of a sudden it seemed to lose it's popularity, maybe the smarter more up to the minute food trends were being favoured. If chutney is going to be worth serving it just has to be good, there are no half measures. I know that we are talking about chutney but I don't think that Baxter's beetroot can be beaten, they obviously use young tender beetroot to pickle and it is the sweetest pickled beetroot I have ever eaten.
