Advantages: A top quality chutney from Baxter`s

Disadvantages: none

I have been buying Baxter`s products for years and never realised that they have been in existence as a company since 1868 in Fochaber, Scotland. The sandy soil in that part of the country is ideal for growing carrots, turnips, leeks and potatoes.
Then as you move inland toward the Grampian Hills the warmer climate produces superb redcurrants, blackcurrants, strawberries and raspberries.

My Auntie was a keen chutney maker, not a single tomato ever went to waste, they were all thrown into the preserving pan and the flavour of the chutney depended on what other fruit and vegetables were in season and also what needed to be used up first. Her passion for bottling, preserving, jam and chutney making led to her larder being full all year round.
I have had the odd dabble with the preserving pan but the wide selection of chutney on offer in the shops these days make it all too easy to just go out and buy a jar of something extra tasty.

Baxter`s make the tastiest chutneys and they have a good range too. We have chutney on sandwiches or salads and in the Summer months when we Barbecue it goes so well with hot barbecued food.
Baxter`s use attractive screw top glass jars and I always wash them out and find another use for them after the chutney is finished.

This Baxter`s Tomato chutney has been cooked from an old Baxter family recipe, take one look at the fiery contents of the jar and you immediately know that tomatoes are the predominant ingredient.
Take a closer look at the listed ingredients and these give an overall idea of the spicy taste of the chutney.
Tomatoes, carrots and red peppers create that rich dark red appearance, sugar adds that subtle sweetness that hides in the background, yellow mustard seeds, cayenne and paprika help give the chutney a good `hot kick`, chopped gherkins help add colour interest, onions build even more taste and the whole chutney ferments in a good vinegar.

Baxter`s tomato chutney has an element of sweetness that is desirable, but it doesn't lack that lovely extra spicy kick.
They have added celery extract to the chutney which lingers in the background but can be tasted. Celery is one of my favourite salad ingredients, but I also adore Celery soup.

This chutney suits everyone, vegetarians, vegans and it is also Gluten free.
100g contains 158 calories, 37.1 carbohydrate, 1.7 protein and 0.3g Fat.
Once you have opened the jar then store it in the fridge and it will usually keep for around a month.
Baxter`s have a wide range of chutneys available in the supermarkets and it retail at about £1.60 a jar.

Summary: Tasty in sandwiches, on salads and for BBQ use.
