WHAT THEY DO
****************
Ben and Jerry's is a well-known and very popular brand of ice cream that can be found in most stores, this is because they have unique tastes and very unique flavours of ice cream.
HOW IT ALL STARTED
*********************
Back in 1966, in a school gym class, two boys met Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield found that they both hated running but loved food.
In 1978, Ben got fired from a series of Mc Jobs while Jerry had failed for the second time to get into medical school.
Since eating was their great passion, armed with a $5 correspondence course in ice cream making, they opened their first scoop shop in a dilapidated gas station in Burlington, Vermont. How is that for luxury ice cream?
They soon became popular in the local community for the finest all natural ice cream made from fresh Vermont milk and cream. Yummy!!
Ben had no sense of taste so he relied on what he called 'mouth feel', so big chunks of chocolate, fruit and nut became their signature. And I am glad about that!
While they disagreed at times over the chunk size, they did agree that they wanted to enjoy themselves - as Jerry put it 'if it's not fun, why do it?' motto out there.
In the early days the boys were pretty bad at bookkeeping. After two months they closed the store and hung a sign that said 'we're closed to figure out whether we're making any money'. And they weren't. But they learned a lot and by 1979, began wholesaling pints of ice cream out of Ben's VW campervan. The rest, as they say, is history.

THE WEBSITE
**************
The website is very useful it tells you all about Ben and Jerry and how things started, what they are planning on doing, new flavours that they will be releasing and old flavours that have long gone, there is also a page where you can create your own style of ice cream and send it to them and if you are lucky and it is good you may have your flavour on a shelf near you.
The website also has a gift shop where you can buy merchandise.
FAIRTRADE
************
In 2006, Ben and Jerry's launched the world's first ever Fairtrade vanilla ice cream. Aside from its great taste, the vanilla ice cream offers a real difference to the lives of the farmers who produce its vanilla and sugar in India and Paraguay. YAY
The premium they pay for these ingredients enables the farmers to make positive steps towards providing basic needs for their families and communities such as healthcare, education and safe housing. ALWAYS GOOD TO KNOW YOU ARE HELPING
While it's not yet possible to convert all our flavours to Fair-trade certified status, we're working on the ones we can.
'Fair-trade is about making sure people get their fair share of the pie. The whole concept of fair-trade goes to the heart of our values and the sense of right and wrong. Nobody wants to buy something that was made by exploiting somebody else.' - Jerry Greenfield (JERRY)
MORALS
********
Every year Ben and Jerry's learn how to recycle more of our solid waste. Back in 1998, they recycled 53%, which actually saved them $66,000! In the offices, green guidelines mean that they recycle, use energy efficient light bulbs and where possible, use 100% renewable energy.
FREE RANGE EGGS
Since they use a lot of eggs they have decided to make the chickens happy, happier chickens better eggs this means that the chickens that Ben and Jerry use are free range chickens with lots of space to move around in.
PACKAGING
************
The tubs can be easily spotted in any line of ice cream and have a bright and colourful design depending on the flavour that is inside, this always catches my eye even though it isn't for the best when you are trying to stay nice and fit. You may think that this means the packaging is bad for the environment, you would be wrong there, here what they have to say
"Being a frozen product does give us challenges on packaging. While we've stripped our tub down to be as friendly as we can make it (it's made from 90% renewable paper stock), the sad truth is that to stop it leaking, we have to coat it with polyethylene which renders it difficult to recycle in the normal fashion." BEN
SO ALL IN ALL I THINK THAT BEN AND JERRY'S IS THE BEST ICE CREAM AROUND AND YOU WOULD BE SILLY NOT TO BUY IT. ALL THE DIFFERENT FLAVOURS, I MIGHT HAVE TO EAT ALL OF THEM ONE DAY WHILST ON A TREADMILL TO KEEP THE WEIGHT DOWN THOUGH.
If you can think of any more information that you would like me to add please mail me and I will put it in thanks for reading LUKE
