Advantages: One of the tastiest ice creams around and environmentally friendly
Disadvantages: Expensive compared with other brands
According to their web site "Back in '66, in a school gym class, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield found they hated running but loved food. Years later in '78, Ben had been fired from a series of McJobs while Jerry had failed for the second time to get into medical school. So, armed with a $5 correspondence course in ice cream making, they opened their first scoop shop in a dilapidated gas station in Burlington, Vermont."
They soon became popular in the local community for the finest all natural ice cream. Ben had no sense of taste so he relied on what he called 'mouth feel', so big chunks of chocolate, fruit and nut became their signature. While they disagreed at times over the chunk size, they did agree that they wanted to enjoy themselves - as Jerry put it 'if it's not fun, why do it?'
In the early days the boys were pretty bad at book-keeping. After two months they closed the store and hung a sign that said 'we're closed to figure out whether we're making any money'. And they weren't. But they learned a lot and by 1979, began wholesaling pints of ice cream out of Ben's VW campervan. The rest, as they say, is history."
I am sooo glad that the did not give up in the early days as we would now not have one of my favorite ice creams - Cookie Dough.
I am sure almost all of you like me adore the cake mix when home baking before it is baked! Well Cookie Dough ice cream is just that - vanilla ice cream with large chunks of uncooked chocolate chip cookie dough. Now this may not be the healthiest of snacks - each 100g containing 270 calories, but who cares when it is so delicious and very moreish.
Cookie Dough comes in 500ml and 150 ml cardboard tubs, which can be recycled. If you are going to share with a friend while watching a movie on a Saturday evening you will definitely need the 500 ml tub! Or two 150 ml tubs each!
The tubs are always jam packed to the very top with ice cream and although fairly expensive compared to other brands I feel that as a treat they are well worth the extra cash. The contents are made from sustainably produced milk and cream, which means that their farmers have happy cows and the ice cream tastes great. They also claim that the ice cream is climate neutral - they use green energy in the production, never use air freight and try where possible to use locally produced products, their packaging is made form 90% renewable products and it recyclable
My daughter and I love to eat it straight from the lovely cardboard tub in which it comes! This saves on the washing up and it also saves time in getting the delicious ice cream into our mouths!
Their web site is packed full of information and worth a visit http://www.benjerry.co.uk/
Summary: Geat to eat straight from the tub while watching a film
