Advantages: Fabulous, original flavour.

Disadvantages: Not good if you are on a diet, very tempting and high in fat.

It was 1986 when Ben and Jerry's first came up with the idea of Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream. It really was a brainwave. It took them another five years to perfect it and it first became available to the public in 1991. (Now how's that for the perfect job: Ben and Jerry's ice cream tester?)

It was, of course an instant success. What it basically is, is vanilla ice cream with lumps of chocolate chip cookie dough. The story behind its development features a group of sorority girls in Vermont who had gone into a grocery store and bought packs of chocolate chip cookie dough and taken the across the road to the Burlington Scoop Shop (Vermont). They had ordered plain vanilla ice cream and chopped the cookie dough into it.

Perhaps the thought of raw dough doesn't sound appetising but it is delicious. The top scoring flavour on the Ben and Jerry's chart is Pumpkin Cheesecake, but not here in UK, of course!

There are supposed to be four servings per container but I suppose that depends on how greedy you are. One 104g (or half a cup) serving has 270 calories and 14g fat, plus 80mg of salt and 24g sugar.

Not exactly a healthy treat, so perhaps it's best not to dwell on the small print on the back of the carton if you feel guilty about it.

You can find fan group on Facebook and Twitter if you are interested in joining other Ben and Jerry's fans. There is one thing for certain; this is no ordinary ice cream. It costs around £4 a tub and you get 416g for your money but it is really creamy and satisfying to eat.

I often buy Haagan Dazs which is cheaper but even that superb ice cream cannot touch the quality and originality of flavour that you get with Ben and Jerry's.

A quick look on their website shows sixty-six flavours and that figure is still rising. By the way, this is not suitable for children. It's far too good and too expensive, buy it for yourself ;)

Summary: In my opinion the best ice cream range there is.
