Advantages: Tastes great, really feel like they've used food and not flavourings

Disadvantages: Can cost a bomb

I keep harping on about prices of things and how expensive luxury items are a big no no, but every now and then I think you've just got to treat yourself, and while I was shopping in Somerfield this afternoon for tea, I spotted that this was down from nearly £5 to £3 for a tub. Knowing that B&J is my wife's favourite brand of ice cream, I did the right thing and bought one, brought it home, dug out two spoons and sat down with one while my 5 year old son armed himself with the other.

'Must leave some for Han, must leave some for Han!' I kept saying as scoop after scoop kept flying out of the tub and into my mouth, where it dissolved, beautifully, into a gooey, chocolatey, fudgy mess before sliding effortlessly down into my already ample stomach.

I stopped Will from devouring too much, as he's only 5 and is partial to a bit of hyperactivity given too much chocolate. The fact that it's now 9pm and he's only just dropped off, after telling me, 'Daddy, I can't sleep. I think I'm just too hyperactive!' is probably my fault.

Needless to say, I left some for the good lady wife. My life would not have been worth living had she returned to find an empty tub and 2 very full and content blokes lounging around the house after she had slogged it out at work today. It would have sent her over the edge.

So, what makes B&J so special? Well, for a start, the ingredients are quite rich without being overly sickly and tasting too 'fake'. There is plenty of choc in there, without it being all flavouring. The quality is undeniable, as the ice cream is just heavenly, keeping its taste and form for a while, without a creamy film developing once it starts melting.

The fudge brownie part is lovely, too, with decent sized chunks of brownie (thin inch long strips of the stuff) interwoven in the ice cream. I was thoroughly impressed with how nice it tasted, and how it didn't make me feel in the slightest bit sick.

Nutritionally, it's gonna throw a lot of calories at you. Ingredients show that 25% of it is cream, with some cocoa, the brownie, vanilla extract, and a few flavourings adding to the effects and tastes that launch themselves into your mouth.

I recommend this. In fact, I recommend all Ben & Jerry's ice creams. There are some I haven't tried as I have a nut allergy, and it's important to note that you should be careful with these sorts of foods where nuts are concerned, as B&J do use nuts in some of their products.

Go on - before the wife gets home from work lads. Go and treat yourself. ;)

Summary: Great ice cream from the expensive ice cream makers!

B&J chocolatey flavours are about the only thing in the world I find sickly! I like Caramel Chew Chew though.
