Having said, many times, that I am going to stop wandering around supermarkets and buying things that I don’t need, but forgetting the things I actually went in there for, I found I simply cannot stop! I went to Sainsburys recently for a change, and couldn’t resist seeing what differences there were in this supermarkets stock as compared with Asda, Tesco and Somerfield. It proved a huge mistake when I walked down the ice cream isle as I saw a tub of Ben and Jerry’s “The Full Vermonty”. I had already read a DooYoo opinion on the stuff, but I’m not a huge fan of nuts in ice cream and didn’t think anything more of it until now. Seeing the tub in front of me, I pretty much decided I had to have it, despite the fact that this was the most expensive price I have seen a 500ml tub of B&J’s sold at. It was whopping £3.79 (actually, I thought it was more expensive than that, but I am mistaken, this seems to be in line with other prices, except Asda, and I’m not sure they will be stocking this variety). The rim of the lid was covered with the word “New” in different languages and this just added to its appeal. The tub itself looks familiar, has a lot of purple and the picture shows falling maple leaves and a zip belonging to, what looks like, a pair of jeans. What jeans have to do with Vermont, or any of the other ingredients I am not sure but the maple leaves are hugely significant being associated with maple syrup (one of the contents of the ice cream). “Maple Ice Cream, Roasted Pecans and a Caramel Swirl”, these are the elements that make up the ice cream, as described on the tub. As usual, there is a bit of splurge on the tub as to the origin of the ingredients and other information, and instead of sharing the whole lot with you, I will just give the useful information. I am even keener to get to talking about the actual flavour than usual, hopefully you will see why!
The ice cream comes from the local family farms to make “manly” maple ice cream using Vermont maple syrup blah blah blah… Right, I wasn’t expecting to like this ice cream much and thought I would probably not ever have to buy it again but I was proved seriously wrong! The ice cream itself is softer than other flavours of Ben and Jerry’s so only a little time is needed to let it warm up, if any at all. It’s extremely creamy and has a lovely taste of maple syrup, but, as with most of the B&J’s ice cream that I have tried, it isn’t over powering or sickly sweet. The caramel swirls run right through the ice cream and there are many whole pecan nuts and also some halves which taste lovely and add interest to the whole thing. As always, there is plenty of luxurious chunks and swirls which make B&J’s ice cream the king of deluxe ice cream. I fell in love with this flavour so much that I actually went back to Sainsburys this afternoon and bought two new tubs. The last one was finished on Saturday when my parents came over and had a taste each. My boyfriend and I managed to eat half the tub in one sitting, something we don’t usually manage. If these things aren’t a testament to how good this flavour is, I don’t know what is. All I can say is go out and try some if you like maple syrup and are not allergic to nuts! The main ingredients are as follows: Cream (26.6%), Caramel (9.4%), Maple Syrup (8.4%) and Roasted Pecans (7.1%). There are no nutritional values advertised, which is probably just as well!
