Advantages: Tasty, easy to prepare

Disadvantages: Not the healthiest way to get your protein

I tried these mini chicken kievs for the first time yesterday, having spotted them in the corner shop and deciding they looked like just the right way to end a slightly rubbish, rainy, grey, depressing day. I wasn't wrong, these are ideal comfort food, as long as you like garlic!

You get 8 mini kievs in a bag, and they're about the size of a moderately large meatball. Bigger and rounder than a chicken nugget, smaller than a full on chicken kiev obviously! One bag is enough for a snack or a supper but if you were making an actual meal you would probably want to add some vegetable and maybe something carby to complete the picture.

They are basically chicken balls filled with a garlic and cheese sauce, cooked from frozen they take about half an hour in the oven. Some of the sauce did start to escape from the kievs towards the end of the cooking time, as always seems to happen with this kind of thing, but not enough for it to be much of a problem.

The chicken is obviously pretty processed, but its still reasonable tasty, with a breadcrumb coating that turns a lovely golden brown colour on cooking and is neither too crispy nor too soggy, its just right! The sauce inside the kievs is quite runny, its not a thick stringy cheese but it is just creamy enough, and the garlic flavour is pretty strong, you can smell it as soon as you open the oven door!

This isn't exactly a health food, processed and quite high in calories and salt, so I wouldn't recommend it for everyday consumption, but as a comfort food or something easy with no prep required when you're busy, they're not a bad buy. They were a bargain price too at only £1 for a bag, although this was a special offer at an independent shop so obviously the price will vary depending on where you buy them.

Summary: Great comfort food
