Do you like an extra virgin olive oil? My husband does and so do I. Bertoli make cery good extra virgin oil they also make Gentille oil, extra light oil and a Classico olive oil
In 1869 Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina had a small shop in Lucca Tuscany here they sold their olive oil. Bertolli olive oil was not available in England till 2001. Bertolli is now a unilever brand.
Francesco Bertolli and his wife Caterina began producing and selling olive oil in 1865 from their small shop in Lucca, Tuscany. Bertolli olive oils were launched in the UK in 2001 and are now a unilever brand.
The extra virgin costs £3.49p for 500ml in Tesco‘s the £6.98 per litre buy the extra. A litre bottle costs £7.39. Think I shall but 2 500ml bottles instead of 1, 1 litre bottle. the extra gentile virgin for £2.66p for the 500 bottle, If you do not want a virgin a 500ml of olive oil will cost £3.31 for 500ml .
For everyday cooking I buy a cheaper own brand olive oil or resort to a sunflower or other oil .The Tesco olive oil costs £2.33p for 500mls the extra virgin Tesco oil costs £4.57 for a litre.
Although Olive trees will grow in this country they are a really a Mediterranean fruit that grows in warm sunny climates. I have fond memories of walking in Olive groves in various Mediterranean countries on my holidays. Bertolli as you might guess from the name is an Italian company. Italy uses a lot of olives in cookery as does Greece.
Olive oil is good for you as olives oil is high in unsaturated fats which is better for your heart than saturated fats found in some other oils. The extra virgin oil also contains antioxidants including vit E which helps maintain body cells. Recently research has found olive oil very very beneficial to health.
The Bertolli olive oil can be seen through the glass bottle a green gold colour. Opening the cap I can smell that bouquet imagine the warm sun and the olive groves.
I use this oil mostly for making a salad dressing. It has a delicious flavour which gives a salad that little extra . A salad I might make if you were coming to my house for supper as a starter is a tomato salad to make this
I will just simply slice some standard tomatoes or half some cherry tomatoes arrange the attractively on a plate . Then I will chop a few basil leaves and add sprinkle these over the tomatoes, then I will drizzle a tablespoon or two of Bertolli olive oil over the tomatoes and serve with some good Italian bread.
I might alter this starter by alternating the slices of tomatoes with a few onion rings.
I might slice some mozzarella cheese and add to the salad or I will add some feta cheese.
Just leave these prepared salads to soak up the sunny Mediterranean olive flavour of Bertolli olive oil for a couple e of hours before serving. This makes a delicious starter or side salad.
To make a different salad dressings just add 3 table spoons of Bertolli olive oil to 1-2 tablespoons of balsamic vinegar add herbs to taste.
Olive oil is excellent for frying meat and vegetables for braising, stewing and baking, using to make a risotto, or to toss your pasta in there are many recipes using olive oil. I really like to use bertolli olive oil it has a really good flavour.

- 28/02/07 I cook with Olive Oil all the time. I did catch my mother using the Olive Oil (the really good stuff too!) to fry an egg instead of using the Tesco Sunflower Oil. What a waste! I've never actually used it as a salad dressing though - useful tip. |
