Advantages: Very easy to make, pretty tasty

Disadvantages: More expensive than making them from scratch

I love cooking and I want my two children to grow up able to cook their own food too. They're only two at the moment, so I guess I've got a while yet before I need to start teaching them cookery skills, but in the meantime, Betty Crocker's Cookie mix is a fun thing to do on a rainy afternoon with them.

The packet itself contains dry ingredients for the cookies and all you need to do is add a couple of tablespoons of water and mix in a bowl with a spoon (my kids love doing this!). You then place teaspoons of the batter on a baking sheet and pop in the oven for 10 minutes or so. Super easy and the kids feel very grown-up and important! They love eating the results too! The only problem I had was trying to explain to them that we needed to wait for a bit for them to cool down before we ate them.

The cookies themselves are actually really nice - they taste quite strongly of vanilla and have plenty of chocoalte chips in them. They also have that 'crunchy on the outside, chewy in the middle' quality that I always seem to fail to get when I make cookies from scratch.

The ingredients were listed on the back of the packet, but the nutritional information wasn't. I would hazard a guess that they are pretty calorific, though.

The packet I bought cost £1.10 from Sainsburys and it made eight biscuits. I think this is a bit pricey, when you consider that to make your own batch of biscuits from scratch would cost about the same, but would make thirty or so. However, for an afternoon's entertainment for the kids I think it was worth it.

Summary: Fun for kids on a rainy afternoon!
