Advantages: nice sauce

Disadvantages: chicken a bit artificial tasting

Being a student I always try to eat a balanced diet but do find myself sticking to a lot of the things that I can pick up on offer. I am also a big fan of quick meals with working too so I like oven food which is still good but literally is placed on a tray and taken care of. When on my weekly shopping trip a few weeks back I was at the freezer section when I came across an offer on Birdseye Chicken Chargills with Reggae Reggae sauce. I have heard of this before and know the Reggae Reggae sauce has been used in Subway as well but had never tried it. I got the idea in my head that it would be too spicy so had avoided it up until now but when glancing down at my basket full of unhealthy snacks I did need some food for meals so picked up the box and threw it into my basket.

Birdseye have been making food for a long time, they have a wide range of chicken, vegetable and fish dishes. The Chargrills range is quite big now they have the originals which I find a bit bland then there's Lime & Chilli, Cracked Black Pepper, Peri Peri also but I haven't had those ones. The Reggae Reggae sauce is a trade marked name made by Levi Roots who is famous for selling the brand on Dragon's Den. Back in Jamaica 35 years ago Levi's grandmother told him a few recipes which were passed down the family and to bring back Caribbean cooking Levi perfected the sauce which he has now renamed Reggae Reggae. Levi and his family for years sold this sauce at the Notting Hill Carnival but by popular demand could not keep up with the requests for it. Sainsbury's gave him a deal at first and now it is stocked in all supermarkets. There is an official website http://www.reggae-reggae.co.uk to learn more about the sauce and its background.

The packaging for the Reggae Reggae Chargrills is quite eye catching they come in an orange and yellow box. The Birdseye logo if featured on the front as is a picture of the chicken itself. The brand ensure this is farm assured chicken breast it is barn reared with vegetarian feed and is made by a committed team of poultry experts. Each portion of chicken is 170 calories, has 9.4g of fat which is 13% of our daily allowance, 0.8g of salt and 2.7g of saturates and lastly 2.3g of sugars. There are no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. For allergy reasons, it is also stated that the product contains wheat, barley, milk and soya. They also state that there may be traces of bones even though great care has been taken to remove them.

So, to cook the chicken is easy enough you get two in a box so it is up to you whether to have 1 or 2. I'd say they are best served with either rice, cous cous, sweet corn or potato wedges or chips. Quite a variety of things accompany this well. They are to be placed on a baking tray at 190 degrees Celsius or Gas Mark 5 for 20 minutes or until piping hot. I find these usually cook quickly as I usually put the heat up slightly higher. They always smell nice while in the oven the smell floats around the house. I always cut through the breast before taking them fully out in case they are not cooked through and this ensures they cook right through to the middle.

They have an unusual smell, I'd say it smells slightly of spices but in a sweeter way, the glaze contains a mix of things peppers, tomato powder, cinnamon, chilli so this would explain why it is such an unusual scent. They do taste quite nice but I find the chicken taste artificial on these almost rubbery. I like proper chicken breast and this just seems quite soft. It does say on the box that it is only 74% chicken breast and that the 26% remaining is other tasty ingredients but I feel this is what brings my rating down of the Chargrills. They are nice the Reggae Reggae glaze in particular makes these but I don't find them filling enough and I will be hungry later on again after having these.

If you want to give these a try they are sold in all supermarkets. The Chargrills are always on offer at the likes of Asda for £1 which to be honest is all they should be worth anyway considering what's in them. Their original retail price is in fact £1.69. These are slightly spicy but I can eat them and I'm useless with spices even the slightest thing is normally too hot for me so anyone should be able to cope with this. These are currently only £1 at Tesco at the minute after further researching so this will go on until the 20th of October.

I can't help but think that things like this is such a rip off. It's much cheaper to buy the stuff and make it yourself but I am a skin flint through and through:)
Great review:)

Only problem I have with these or any of the chicken chargrills from birds eye is the occasional chewy bit, always puts me off. Taste good though.
