Advantages: Cheap for 4 pies even at full price
Disadvantages: Taste and look economy
When it comes to pies they are very much a favourite food of mine even though I do try to avoid them at all costs as they arnt the most healthy of thing to eat!
However I do indulge myself from time to time and these pies, for four of them in my local Asda store at an offer price of £1.00 a box instead of the usual price of about £2.00 a box had me excited to try them out considering they are from the Birds Eye family!
Well each pie comes in its own silver round foil container and within a yellow box and on the front of that box we are told that they are Birds Eye 4 Chicken Pies and that they are made with 100% chicken breast and that they contain no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives and that we are meant to just bake them and there is an at a glance nutritional chart displayed too. On the back of the box other information listed includes ingredients and allergy advice being given, cooking instructions are listed (30-35 minutes in the oven), there is a nutritional chart displayed and contact details for Birds Eye are also given. Nice enough quality packaging this is as well as being informative enough.
Well as I have told you already all you have to do with these is pop them in the oven without gazing them and in there foil containers for about 30-35 minutes straight from frozen.
When I first popped them in the oven when they were frozen they looked rather flat and to be fair when they came out of the oven they didn't look bigger or that the pastry had risen or anything like that although the tops of the pies had gone a little golden but not all that much really.
Taste wise, well the pastry was crispy and rater bland and fell apart with ease. To me it lacked flavour or a butteryness to it. The filing was ok with large pieces of chicken breast that was moist and not one bit rubbery in a gravy stock along with about 1 pea per pie and a slither of carrot. There was little filling in the way of the gravy and of vegetables although what there was, was tasty enough and well seasoned but really the ingredients apart from the chicken were rather sparce.
These were rather bland pies in my opinion and felt economy in ever way however they tasted ok enough and the chicken was nice!
