Advantages: Soft & succulent chicken, hot spicy glaze, lower fat/cals than similar frozen chicken products
Disadvantages: None
I thought I'd review these now as I've just tried one after I bought a box a few months ago and they've just been sat in my freezer. I must admit I was slightly dubious at first when I took it out of the packaging and saw the orange coating on the chicken but I was pleasantly surprised. Looks can be deceiving because they're delicious!
Peri Peri Chicken Chargrills are produced by Birds Eye so you expect a fair degree of quality. They're a very popular producer with years of knowledge & experience and have been very keen lately to promote their produce to be nutritionally balanced. 'Good mood food' I think Suggs calls it!
There's a range of frozen chicken products which Birds Eye make and a few varieties of their chargrilled section including cracked pepper and seasoned Thai. I went for these because peri peri is quite spicy and makes a nice change from the usual bland chicken I buy. Most supermarkets seem to stock these and retail around £1.69. They're currently on offer in Tesco until 20.1.09 at £1 which is a bargain. 1 x 194g box contains 2 fillets so at £1.69 they may work out quite expensive if eaten regularly, but these seem to be on offer quite a lot so I'm going to Tesco to stock up the extra freezer in the conservatory!
What are they? Each portion is a simple chicken fillet made with 100% breast meat. This is good to know because you can be sure you're eating something healthy and natural rather than processed junk. There's no artificial colours, preservatives or flavours incase you're interested. The flavours come from the spicy pepper glaze all around the chicken. Like I said, when it first comes out of the box it looks orange and I half expected it to be oozing everywhere, sticky and nasty-tasting when it was cooked. They're a fair size so one should suffice a healthy appetite and each portion contains 160 calories and 7.7g of fat. That's actually very good in comparison to alternatives like breaded chicken/southern fried styles etc, and you get plenty of flavour at the same time.
These are to be cooked in the oven and take around 20 minutes at 190 degrees. I actually cooked mine for around 20-25 at over 200 just to ensure they were piping hot in the middle and crispier around the edges (for some reason I quite light some foods slightly burnt, which is just as well because I'm not great with remembering how long things have been in the oven). If you put them to the top make sure you turn it over occasionally so it cooks all around and through it. It can be a little sticky with the glaze so it's best to use tongs.
How do they taste? I've had peri peri chicken at Beefeater and I can honestly say that although the Birds Eye portions are a little smaller they're just as good! Very tender chicken which is soft and succulent as opposed to dry. This is perhaps also due to them being chargrilled which one of the healthiest ways of cooking without adding anything to it and sealing all of the flavour and moisture in. The glaze is hot and spicy, but not too much so that it burns you mouth. It has a moderate spicy flavour which is delicious and far better than I expected. It tastes like quality food and would go great with chips & salad or rice. There's nothing negative I can say about these to be honest, they're spot on :o)
Summary: Quality nutritious chicken with a kick of flavour, delicious!
