Advantages: Make a fun change to chips, go well with anything, tasty tasty tasty
Disadvantages: None from my household!
I like to have a variety of frozen potato products in my freezer as I get really bored with eating the same chips over and over again. One of both mine and my husband's favourite frozen potatoes have to be potato waffles and the tastiest ones by far are easily Birds Eye's.
These come in a pack of 12 in a big red 680g box. The only negative thing I have to say about these is that they take up so much room in the freezer and I can never seem to fit them in. I always end up having to take them out of the box and empty them into separate sandwich bags to store them in.
When first gotten out of the pack they are a pale yellow colour and are fairly large - two waffles is plenty enough to go with any main meal. Each waffle is a square grid shape with holes going through them and I think their shape makes them a more fun potato product for children (and adults!).
The waffles can be cooked either in the grill, turning them occasionally, which takes 8 minutes, or in the oven at gas mark 7 or 220 degrees C, taking 12 minutes and can be turned once. I don't have a preference for cooking them as in both the grill and the oven the waffles turn out nicely. Once they are cooked they should be crisp and a golden colour. They taste best when the edge is slightly crispy but when the centre is still soft as they're very fluffy and light. As they don't take very long to cook make sure you keep an eye on them in the oven as, if overcooked, they loose their softness and become too crispy. These are made from real freshly mashed potatoes and they do taste similar to chips (just more fun) with the fluffy potato in the centre and a harder coating on the outside. Usually I find I need salt sprinkled over any potato products but these already taste a little salty. The good thing about these is that they aren't at all greasy or oily.
These usually retail at between £1.30 and £1.85 but usually cost only £1 from Asda. Considering other cheaper brands (e.g. Asda's or Iceland's own brand) of potato waffles also cost only £1, it is worth getting Birds Eye's range as they are much nicer. Both Asda's and Iceland's own range don't crisp up as much and they don't get the nice golden colour that the Birds Eye ones do, and they also taste plainer.
Each potato waffle contains 105 calories so it fits well with Birds Eye's healthy frozen food image. Doing this review now I've just noticed that they contain mustard which I think is slightly weird! I hate mustard but I can't say that I've ever even detected a hint of it in these so I don't care!
These make a great potato accompaniment to any main meal or are perfect for a snack topped with scrambled eggs or beans. At only £1, they're great value and are a fab and fun thing to eat that go well with anything at anytime!
Summary: Crisp and golden on the outside, fluffy and light on the inside
