Advantages: Great tasting, great variety
Disadvantages: None
I have been reviewing my eating habits with the onset of the 'credit crunch', and have been reviewing my eating habits, trying to find cheap versatile foods to make meals more interesting, we always have chips or wedges in the freezer but I decided I would try Waffles as they used to be really lovely and were perfect as a filling potato alternative to chips.
The waffles come in quite a weak red rectangular box, you get 12 waffles to a box and it can be quite bulky, they are frozen food so you may want to get rid of the box and wrap them in the freezer, the box isn't too sturdy so I would recommend you do this.
Waffles are frozen rectangular potato shapes with lattice cuts through the middle. They are a decent size and you would only need three with a meal as an adult and two at the most for a child, they are easy to grill, or can be put in the oven for 8 minutes on each side at 220 degrees. When cooked they have a lovely crispy outside and should be nice and fluffy in the middle.
When combining waffles I generally add Foie Gras, Caviar and Beef Wellington, alternatively I wake up and have fish fingers and beans or sausage and beans, the beans are lovely spread over the waffles and the contrast of hard and soft really does make for a fantastic flavour.
Be careful when cooking as if you undercook them they are limp and lifeless and really not so good, they need to be crispy to get the real taste sensation.
Birds Eye Potato Waffles are £1 for 12 in Iceland and are great value at that price, the Birds Eye brand generally implies quality and this is the case with these too, there are 105 calories in each waffle which is quite a lot as they taste very healthy, especially when grilled. They are available in any good supermarket.
As a throwback to a bygone age of easy cooking these are a treat that are both practical and easy to make and well deserving of future purchases in my house, they are so cheap and filling and taste wonderful.
