Advantages: Kids love them, omega 3 content

Disadvantages: Salmon flavour not distinctive

I was browsing through a magazine when I was intrigued to see an advertisement for Bird's Eye Salmon Fish Fingers. As salmon is my favourite fish and two out of my three children like this fish also, I thought they sounded very tempting and an interesting alternative to the usual cod filling. I hoped I could tempt one of my children into eating salmon too.

I proceeded to order a box of 10 with my online shopping at Tesco last week and couldn't wait to try them out.

~~~Packaging~~~
They're packed in a box of 10 with good old Captain Bird's Eye featuring prominently on the front. There's also a tempting picture of a fish finger filled with delicious looking flakes of salmon with a slice of lemon alongside. In the background is a photo of two 'full of life' salmon leaping out of the sea. Bet they're leaping up to get noticed, shouting 'pick me, pick me.'
~~~Ingredients and Nutrition~~~

The all important ingredients consist of 58% salmon with the other 42% made up of breadcrumbs, batter and vegetable oil.
Each fish finger contains around 64 calories, 3.5g of protein, 6g of carbohydrate, 7.7g of fat and 0.2g of salt.

~~~Cooking Instructions~~~
They can be cooked either grilled or in the oven and take about 12 minutes either way. I'm very pleased to see they don't even provide details for frying them which I'm sure many people would once have done.
~~~The Verdict~~~

The most noticeable difference on extracting the fish fingers from their box was the colour of the crumbs. In comparison with regular Birds Eye fish fingers, the breadcrumb on the outside is a much brighter yellow. In fact, I'd almost go as far as calling it orange. It was rather appealing actually.

After cooking them under the grill for the recommended amount of time they were lovely and crunchy on the outside and lightly browned.

Once it came to cutting them open I could inspect the salmon content inside. A delicious waft of steam escapes from each fish finger once you cut them open. I usually do this in advance of presenting them to my youngest, to allow them time to cool down.

The crumb part is lovely, crunchy and tasty. The salmon was quite soft in texture but I must admit I found the taste a bit bland for my taste. Personally I couldn't tell too much difference between these and the regular cod variety.

As a little test, I gave the kids two of the salmon fish fingers and one regular cod fish finger without telling them. I wanted to see whether they noticed any difference. And do you know what, they didn't. It was only after I asked them if they'd noticed anything different in their fish fingers that eldest son declares 'oh, I thought there was something different. Some of them were a different colour.'

So, although they kids couldn't really tell any difference, I was pleased I managed to get my daughter to eat salmon so she can't tell me she hates it any more.

They're available in most major supermarkets for around £1.75.

Summary: Tasty fish fingers, but you probably won't be able to tell the difference to the cod variety

Don't think I would like these! Great review though.

Weird - would have thought these were very different from cod ones.
