After reading several positive reviews about the new Birds Eye Salmon fish fingers I decided to try them for myself. Birds Eye have clearly been listening to research that shows that children's tastes are becoming more sophisticated and decided to make the popular fish finger more upmarket.

The fish fingers come in an attractive eye catching box. The picture on the front shows the pink salmon contained inside a golden coloured fish finger. Each box contains 10 salmon fish fingers. I paid £2 from my local Tesco but the recommended retail price is around £2.60. The information on the outside of the box says that the fish fingers are made from wild salmon. However on reading the nutritional information on the back of the box I see that these fish fingers contain 58% salmon. There is no, mention what other type of fish has been used. This is something I would like to know! The breadcrumbs and batter covering contain vegetable oil. A serving of 3 fish fingers will give you 190 calories, and 8 grams of fat.

These fish fingers are very quick and easy to prepare. I prefer to grill them and they will take about 10 minutes under a medium heat. You do need to turn them a few times to ensure they cook evenly. Alternatively you can cook them in the oven at 230c or gas mark 8 for about 12 minutes.

Next for the important taste test. I am not really a fan of white fish fingers, but these were very different. The outer breadcrumb coating was both crisp and tasty. The salmon contained inside was moist and succulent. The salmon flavour was no where near as god as with a fresh piece of wild salmon, but it was pleasant enough. Overall I really enjoyed the taste. My children were impressed too and ate every last bit!

Overall I liked these new fish fingers and will buy them again. However they are not the healthy fish meal that Birds Eye would have us believe. When I have the time I prefer to make my own fish in breadcrumbs using wholemeal breadcrumbs and fresh fish. However these are a useful addition to the freezer and great when you need to prepare something in a hurry.

Summary: Salmon fish fingers

I really liked these. They were a little bit different from just normal white fish fingers.
