Advantages: great, fills you up, not unhealthy
Disadvantages: not healthy
I love Birds Eye products and one of their items I'm particularly fond of is their simply chicken fillets in crispy batter. I find these a nice plain meal for when your not overly hungry and don't know what you fancy. They are a nice staple food!
They can be found in all supermarkets such as Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's and I have also seen them in smaller shops and little newsagents. They are frozen products and can therefore be found in the freezers. In my local Asda they were placed in a freezer next to all the other beef burgers of different brands however sometimes they will be found alongside all the other Birds Eye Products.
There are various chicken fillets in the range however these are just the usual birds eye fillets in batter. They come in a box that contains 2 of them and each product weighs 107g. The box costs £2.25. This therefore works out at £1.12 per breast. Personally I don't feel that this is brilliant value but in the current credit crisis it isn't as bad as it is going to get. If you think about it a chicken burger from the likes of McDonalds will cost you around £1.10 so this is probably just about right!
The 2 breasts come in an attractive box. It is mainly orange in colour and looks really quite pretty. on the back obviously is all of the nutritional information and ingredients. On the front is the brand name, some product information, and a beautiful, mouth watering picture. The picture is of one of the chicken breast fillets. It is cut in half so you can see the delicious looking, very fresh chicken inside. It doesn't look like its very hot though which is confusing. In the background there are a few pictures of green beans however I didn't take this suggestion on board.
Taking them out the packet I noticed they were a nice size. They were a lot bigger than I had expected which was great! They did look quite pale in colour though and I hoped they'd brown up a little. The batter thankfully looked very thick and the batter seemed to be a really good coating. We baked ours in the oven and by the time they had cooked, a delicious smell had filled the house. My mum commented that it smelled like fast food but I personally loved this aroma.
We served them with a portion of chips and some sweetcorn. This was a lovely substantial meal and kept me filled up for quite a while. The breast was amazing. The batter on the outside was so amazing. It was really thick like I'd thought and tasted in between the taste of the batter you get in the fish and chip shop and the kind of breadcrumbs you get on products such as kievs! The chicken inside was lovely. It was a great texture and was really chewy. I loved it! It went amazing with the chips and sweet corn too. It was a great size and filled me up well!
One breast has 220 calories in it which I feel is about right. It could be a lot less but its not overly high!
